I just bought a RAR in .30-06 today! Gander Mountain had these on sale for $379. My Wally-World doesn't carry guns, so this price is about as good as I'm going to get around here without ordering online (I'm picky, and don't like ordering guns that I can't see or handle online).
This was not high on my want list, but if I ever get the chance to go hunting with someone, I wanted to have the proper tool to do it with. I was concerned that the .30-06 cartridge would be too much for a lighter gun like the RAR, but after talking to a helpful customer (God forbid the employees at GM would know anything), he told me there are lighter loads available that would not kick as much. Plus, unlike .308, .30-06 is easily available. They had a whole shelf full of the stuff!
I checked out some scopes while at GM and really liked the sight picture of the Nikon Prostaff (BDC) Model 6727 3x9x50. I can get this scope for $176 at Amazon.com, rather then the $229 GM was charging. I guess they say you should spend as much money on the scope as the rifle, but I liked this scope better then some others that were priced much higher.
The only complaint I have is there was a small, minor blemish on the barrel were the "bluing" was worn off (why do they insult our intelligence and call it bluing?) I looked at several other RAR's and the same blemish was on the same spot on those rifles as well, even more worse then mine. I think it is the way Ruger packs these things. They really need to stop being so cheap and pack their rifles in bigger boxes.
Also, I was happy to find that I will get a free cheek pad/ammo sleeve for the RAR from Ruger for buying one. I will post photos after I get my Nikon Prostaff scope mounted and the Ruger cheek pad/ammo sleeve and sling.
Congrats on the purchase, I too just got the same rifle and am dying to shoot it. Cabelas has the Nikon Buckmasters on sale for $159.99 right now and I'm going to get that one (going to have Bass Pro price match since no Cabelas here).
Anxious to shoot mine, waiting to get outside on a nice day and sight it in.going to try out several brands and weights of ammo. Try and see what this rifle likes best. It has a great feel to it. I wanted something with a little kick,30-06 should do....can't get an M-14. Last one was RVN. I got a Leupold/Redfield 3-9x42mm. The cheek pad is a nice freebie. I'm thinking about a Harris bipod.

Download the Nikon Spot On program to your computer. It is designed to work with the BDC scope. If you like it and think it's something you will use, it's available as an app also. I have it on my iphone for my 6-18X40 BDC.
I'm having a hard time between the all American and tried and true Remington 700! I started a thread on G&A and with over 50 responses not 1 was for the Ruger! I think it's just too new and too low of price for people to respect it. I will keep reading in hopes for some comparison.
Yea, there are forums that have their regulars that favor certain brands, I see that alot with bullets, scopes, everything. Some forums have a love affair with Berger bullets for example, while others kiss Nosler's rear, but in time we can always sort thru to get the facts.
I can tell you that I am a M700 fan from way back, but I try my best to be objective, when I read a dozen or more articles concerning the RAR with very consistant results, it got my attention.
Comparing Rem 700 & RAR, well that would depend on which Model 700 & how much you want to spend? If you just want to buy a good rifle & cost is a lessor consideration, the upper end M700's are great. I have more M700's in my safe than anything by a long shot, but most are Upper end, a couple of Sendero's, a 5R Mil Spec in particular that are really special, but they cost 2.5-3 times the Ruger. I have an old wood stock ADL that does very well, but the lower end Rems of today are not that special in stock form.
A Tubberware stocked ADL will need bedded & the bores are typically copper factories until smoothed out. From my experience testing 2 new RAR in 308 and several M700 ADL types,(close to same price point) I would place my bet on the Ruger. The Ruger doesn't need bedding with their bedding system & I noticed both bores were quite smooth for a non-custom tube. I am getting 1/2-3/4" groups with 165-168 gr. bullets with the Rugers & did so very quickly.
Again, to compare with the Alum. bed stocked upper end Rems is a different matter.
Take it for what it's worth, but the Ruger would not be in my safe if it did not deliver.
If Target shooting is part of the deal I doubt you would be happy with that combo scope.
Anyway, have you decided against the 30-06, unless something just changed the Rem Varmit does not come in '06.
AVarmit ADL changes things a little from a reg. ADL, at least you are getting a stiff barrel. However, the stock on that unit is quite soft, most people I know who have these (those who are shooters) tell me when they use a bi-pod the tip of the forend will touch & they either bed the rifle, or buy a stock, most buy a stock. Some do good right out of the box, but a gamble. If I am going to carry a Heavy Varmit barrel, I want to get alot in return, which means better & more consistant accuracy.
Yes, spending some money on the gun will make it nice & yes the 700 parts are everywhere. But if you do that you can add a upper end Sav. with a McMillian or HS stock, or high end Rem.
You need to think about your primary use, but in stock form & in the league of light weight guns, the Ruger is quite impressive.
In my case I just got a 5R Mil-Spec & a Ruger & the headaches stopped.
