I have been really pleased with my new compact Hawkeye. I have only had it out to the range twice so far but it has exceeded all my expectations. The wood and checkering are beautiful and right out of the box the trigger breaks clean with no creep at 3lbs 2oz. When I bought the rifle I expected to have to float the barrel and glass the action ( I am afraid to take it out of the stock after shooting it).........because as I was breaking in the barrel (@65 yrds cleaning between every shot) it was shooting a nice cluster on the target. When I moved out to 110 yds (100 meters) it grouped under an inch. This was with new virgin WW brass that was full length sized.
I called Ruger to find out what the bore dia. is...........The lady said they use .310. Well Hornady makes a 123 grain .310 dia. bullet just for the 7.62X39 so that is what I started with. I added a Redfield 2x7 scope (that fits within the Ruger rings perfectly and the eye relief was just right). This rifle weighs 5lbs 10ozs (add 1 lb for the scope) and feels light as a feather.
The proof is in the shooting.......for a 16 1/2" ' pencil barrel ' I was indeed impressed...........Take a look at the targets. Recoil is very mild and it just feels solid when you fire it..........// One note--- H322 leaves a little unburned powder in the barrel and may not be the best choice. A1680 and IMR 4198 were tested as well (only 5 rounds of each of these two) and burned much cleaner. However H322 still shot a little tighter group. I will need to do more testing to decide which powder I will settle on. The other two powders shot to the same point of impact and only opened the groups up by 1/4" or so....So any of the three would work fine ///...........Don in SC

/// All shooting was done off the bags with 3-4 MPH breeze @ 45-51 deg F///

I would like to hear from anyone else that loads for this carbine in the .30 Commie.

Excellent! I have a boat-paddle stock 22" version in that caliber....Really fun to shoot. Mine is not quite that accurate, but that is with factory WWB ammo! Looks like I need to start loading......

Thanks for posting! The walnut looks great!
