I have the .243 American and have nothing but good things to say. Out of the box, I get inch or better groups consistently. The trigger breaks at 3 lbs. The bolt is smooth.A flush rotary mag. It is light weight for all day carrying. I won't have to baby it while walking through green briar's and lugging it around the mountains here in PA. All for a very good price point. The barrel nut is why I looked at in the first place. I have Savages too, and it works in them.

There is nothing and I mean nothing wrong with the Rugers!
However, if that plastic stock is something that bothers you, then go to the SAVAGE and get the better trigger and a reinforced plastic stock. I have both Rugers and Savages, they are very good rifles, both accurate OK. I certainly do like that new trigger by Savage. It's your call, good luck. |

I would point out that the "soft" stock on the Ruger is not as big a problem as other cheap stocks because of the unique bedding system, it is held rigid and tight in those spots, very ingenius system that elimates a traditional recoil lug. I wanted a "tree stand" 308 along with my Tactical Rem 700. I believe this one fills the bill better than any other.

My 30 06 is very accurate and the recoil is nothing to worry about. It is light and handsome.

In .270 Win, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

My American was sent out removing finish,Hot Blue, and jeweled bolt with trigger up-grade.I would not do this to a generic gun but my LGS lost a bet and now waiting on my newer rifle.

That's a surprising approach on a budget rifle.
What trigger upgrade?

Biggest issues is that I can't find one to buy around here! Have handled one and would love one, but like I said can't find one to buy around here yet.

Sounds like a good rifle/cartridge combination. I absolutely LOVE the .270 Winchester, and the Ruger American is the best rifle I have ever seen for the price. My LGS is selling them for $349.99 right now.... I'd get one here soon if they'd just offer them in .22 CF's or the .35 Whelen, cause I've got my bases covered pretty well in their caliber ranges.
GO GET ONE NOW! AND THAT'S AN ORDER. |

I just got an American 308 from my gun dealer through Davidson's in Airzona.
My dealer had put in a request for one but had not heard anything since.
Then 10 show'd up at Davidson's but gun dealers were not allowed to purchase them.
Davidson's were holding them back for individual purchases. So I ordered and it was shipped to my dealer. I guess some times you can get them before a lgs if you keep your eyes open for one. I paid $334 out the door. You can look at Davidson's stock on
gun genie website. Not sure if they have any still in stock but it's work a look.
Cheers,
Tye

I started to buy one for the wife but she wasn't there and I didn't know if the stock would be long for her or not so I passed. That's was the same day I bought the SP101 22 when they were having Ruger Days. They were 309.00. They looked like a decent rifle. I wouldn't compare it to the M77 MKII's or the Hawkeyes. For a lower end rifle I thought they were nice. I need to take the wife one day to a shop and see how it fits her.

From what I know the Ruger American is a fine rifle, one I considered before I found a smokin' deal on my Rem 700 SPS.

For what it's worth, my local Walmart is now stocking the Ruger American. I didn't see what caliber it was, but saw it at a glance and was a bit surprised to see it there. You may try Walmart if you're in the market and no one else has them. It's that time of year where everyone is gearing up for hunting season so some stuff will be harder to find.
