grandpabear will become famous soon enough
Shot placement is crucial no matter what your using. That said, I don't see why not.

With a good bullet like a partition, A-frame or fail safe that will hold together and penetrate and the 308 should be fine for elk. Good luck and post up some pics if you get one.

+1 for granpabear's comment. I have seen so many people think they have got to get a man portable howitzer for elk. We lost count of the elk/deer my grandfather has taken w/ the same old 30-30. I would be willing to bet that more elk have met their demise to an old 30-06 or 7mm than all others combined. Granted, I hunt w/ a .300 mag but thats because of different reasons. I took my first five w/ a model100 in .284. I'd say use it, but as already stated get some good practice w/ it and know it's and your capabilities to hit a pie plate at 300yrds and less in different conditions. happy hunting.

I see no problem using a Scout rifle for Elk.

If you do your part the .308 Win. is capable of taking an Elk. The belief that you must have a heavy caliber for Elk is part myth part urban (hunter) legend. Using a heavy caliber certainly doesn't hurt, yet it's bullet selection and shot placement that will be the most telling. The excption is that if you are hunting Elk in open country where longer shot are the norm. Then you would be better served by a flatter shooting caliber.

Are they saying no to the 308 or something else about the GSR?

I have taken Elk Deer Bear and most everything else with 2 guns..A Winchester 30-30 and a Marlin336c 30-30.. I ground hunt and stalk.. Never missed filling my tags..Neither did my Dad with same weapons.. Hunted the 11 Western States and Canada.. Mainly know your animal and learn to hunt..Should be no problems.

I had this very conversation with a friend last month... He just picked up a new Rem 700 in 300 WM and commented that my Scout wasn't enough gun for large game.
I said that I didn't plan on taking game from 400 yds... He laughed and said I was crazy to try and get close to any large animal. My response was that 'hunting' was about tracking and finding game, not about shooting from a rocking chair!
As said above, just make sure of your shot placement and take your time...
All the best!

The 308 Will perform fine for elk. Make sure that your using a good bullet say the Nosler Partition is a good choice .
Good luck and have a great hunt this fall.

A 308 Win isn't much less powerful than a 30-06. Of course it's good enough for ek!

Agreed!

The .308 is just fine for Elk, and the GSR is very capable of shooting at extended ranges with the right load.

Been hunting elk, deer and antelope, plus the occasional moose for the last 50 years and for most of that time I used a .308 or 30/06. People who think you need a cannon and try to shoot animals at long range are bad hunters and stupid in my opinion. The longest kill I have made is a little over 250 yds. and that was because the terrain dictated it. If you can hunt, you can learn to get close to most game and make a clean kill shot, and you do not need a super magnum to get the job done.

People who talk about hunting at long range remind me of people I guided years ago who bragged about the number of "sound shots" they had taken. Sound shots are when you shoot at noise even if you can't see what you are shooting at. People who think they can take game at 400-500 yds or more are no different. Most hunters can't shoot well enough to take those kinds of shots. I know some of you probably can, but you are the exception from my experience. Sorry for the rant, but I have seen a lot of bad hunters over the years who thought a bigger gun would make up for poor hunting skills.
