I just want to know what you guys have to say about it? The good, the bad and the ugly.

Greetings,

I would not get the 300 or 338 RCM because of the price of ammo. The 308 family of cartridges (243, 260, 7mm-08, 338 Federal) are easier on the budget and shoulder.

The Ruger bolt action is my first choice for dangerous game, and I have a 375 RCM Alaskan for varmints.

Funny you should say that, the 527 in that caliber is on my likely next guns list. Yeah, so . .. how many rounds you have through it? What do you think of it (how did it group)? Why do you think you might have made a huge mistake? What did you think of the trigger?

I'd been looking for a good compact .308 boltgun for a couple years & was delighted to see the CM come out.
Quite fond of mine.

Better ballistics than the Scout, just as compact, steel bottom metal, good sights, no mag sticking or falling out. :)

Can use a slightly better pad.

Aze,

If you want a "compact Mag." in some caliber, go ahead and buy one.

Just know that much of the hype about how they are so much more effecient then the older calibers is just that hype.

Set down with some reloading books and look at the facts for each of the calibers in question.

Make an informed choice and if the new razzle dazzle calibers ring your bell, go for it! Just don't expect it to be what it isn't in regards to being better.

If you want the shortest possible action, well maybe the compact cartridges might be ok. But if that factor is really important, just buy a #1. Other then a brake open action, hard to get any shorter/smaller

Keep em coming!

Macx,

My CZ 527 7.62x39 is actually growing on me. Id get it again. Ive put about 300 rounds threw it already. Cheap stuff. Its a very accurate rifle ppl just sometime give the cartridge a bad name cause they only shoot it threw AK47s. This rifle takes it to a whole different level. The trigger is very nice, I really have grown to love it. I would recommend it to you.

Greetings,

Do not overlook the 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 Sweed, or 260 Remington. The 6.5 calibers have a lot to offer. The Ruger Scout rifle should be considered as well. Given a choice between a 16.5 inch barrel, and a 20 or 22 inch barrel, the longer barrel is the better choice for power and velocity-reach out and get the job done.

And don't forget the barrel length listed for the Scout does not include the flash suppressor.
There's only an inch or so of difference in OAL between the Scout & the CM, and the CM provides slightly better velocities in .308 with more barrel.
IF that's important to you. :)

Rcm

I really like my 338 RCM! Can't wait for the snow to melt a little so I can go bear hunting! I really like the rifle more then the round but still it is great being able to load up some 225 grain Barns for big bear.

The rifle is short compact and is a handy tool on the river boat or on my 4 wheeler. I like the iron sights and when Im fighting brush and it's snowing and raining I can take the scope off. I havven't shot any animals with it yet but hope to shot a grizzly bear with it this spring.

I love the M77 but I have no love for the compact magnums. A reloader can not copy the ballistics because of proprietary powders. They offer no advantage over the far more popular and proven WSM's and standard belted magnums. I would bet the house that these cartridges won't withstand the test of time.

If you want a short magnum, get either a 300 WSM or 270 WSM based on your needs. These have been around and will stay around. Reloaders can match the loads too.

I've been looking at both the Compact Magnum in .308 and the GSR for a couple months. No local shops have had a compact magnum in to look at in person but I do like the classic hunting rifle look with the shortened barrel. The thing I like the best of these rifles is that they come with iron sights, a requirement of any rifle I buy from now on. Scopes are great but I like having iron sights. Would hate to be on a hunt of a lifetime or be in a self defense situation and find my scope is damaged with no plan B.

Other then having a shorter and lighter action/rifle, there is simply no good reason to go with any of the shorter cartridges, unless you just want the "new thing".

All the hype about how they are close to or equal to the older rounds, 300win mag, 338 win mag etc. are simply just hype!

Not saying they do not do the job,and a good one at that, they just simply are not a reason to sell a rifle you have or turn down one of the older and belted rounds if the rifle rings your bell.

Yep, the new razzle dazzle rounds can do a great job, just don't expect them to be what they are not and never will be, better then the tried and proven numbers.

A friend has a "thing" about belted cartridges. OK, if'n ya don't like them for whatever reason, not a problem with me.

However, after years of belted cartridge use, not once, never, not even slightly, has there been a negative of feeding or preformance even remotely caused by the belt.

Keep em coming!
