I recently purchased an older Ruger M77 with the tang safety. It is chambered in .308 Win. I noticed that there was some rust under the front sight and wanted to remove it to clean up the rust. I removed the blade from the sight assembly and then the hex head screw that holds the sight assembly in place. I also removed the plunger and spring from the sight. How should I go about removing the sight base from the barrel? Is it just a band that needs to be tapped off or is it some type of press fit? Thank you for any help you may be able to give me.

I suggest you contact Ruger and ask to speak with a technician. I have an idea that getting the band off is too complecated except for the well trained.
