According to a friend that I highly respect as an experienced shooter this a excellent caliber to hunt a wide variety of big game with.
Believe it or not even moose are taken on a regular basis in Finland using the 6.5X55 Swede.
I have a semi sporterized Swedish Mauser Carbine that is a pleasure to shoot, it has the power to cleanly take game up to the size of a black bear and not punish your shoulder, I think it is a great choice to train begginers in shooting.
Ruger offered this caliber a long time ago. I also bought one new. I added a muzzle break compinsator from Que industry to adjust the barrel vibration to the load I worked up. This is similar to the Browning Boss system. This is a tac driving rifle and can be used for varmints up to elk. I don't think I would hunt grizzlys with it though. My best group with 140 gr Noslers was 3 shots in 1/4 inch at 225 yards. I also own a Swedish Mouser M38 in same caliber.
The 6.5X55 is not a rare caliber. I have seen several of them for sale here in PA and have thought about buying one, but haven't as of yet. I would love to get one in either a Ruger M77 or a Winchester M70 FWT, as it would make a wonderful hunting rifle. It is a very versatile cartridge and has killed a lot of Moose in Canada. And with the right 140 grain bullet I wouldn't hesitate to hunt a Moose with this cartridge.
