Sight height issue

I have an older M77 stainless alweather with high mounts 30mm with an old Redfield Illuminiator 3.5x10 50mm. I have always assumed the sight height to be 1.5" like it would be with shorter mounts. I'm shooting 3006 150 grain Federal Serria Gameking ammo for last 20 years. Kill everything close no problem. Have gun sighted in 2.5" high @100 to be dead on 250. Missed two nice deer last year at 300 and 315. I think I'm using wrong sight height with Federal Ballisitics Calculator.
Can anyone tell me what the correct sight height really is?

I'm sorry, but I can't. You did say you're shooting with a scope having a 50mm objective and using high mounts for clearance. I can guarantee your scope height is more than 1.5" as used in "standard" ballistics tables. Try measuring from the center of your bore to the center of your scope. I'm betting it will be more like 2". That half inch changes the ballistic equation drastically. I have learned you must shoot paper at any range you intend to hunt game animals at to verify your calculations. The deer deserve it. In your case I'm pretty sure you shot over the animals. I discovered the importance of line-of-sight above the bore axis when I scoped an old AR-15A1. The rifle has a fixed carry handle so the scope sits up pretty high. I zeroed 1.5" high at 100yds expecting to be on at 200, and about 7" low at 300. I set up my folding shooting bench and placed gallon jugs at 100, 200, and 300 yards. With a center hold my .223 hand-loads using Speer 55gr SP's vaporized the 100 targets. I was surprised to find myself shooting over the 200yd jugs when using the same center hold. I found I needed to hold on the bottom of the milk jug to connect. The upside is that all I had to do was go back to a center hold ( and allow for wind) to make good hits at 300yds. I never would have guessed that without actually testing at that range.

I agree with ngashooter you most defiantly shot over them without getting into volumes of ballistic data real or imagined methods of scope mounting and such and such inches high or low as a given distance its all just a guide to get you shotting in the ball park.. The real and only proper way to truly know what is really going on is to shoot targets or gongs at the ranges you hunt at with the set up you have and the ammo you intend to hunt with. I have seen it time and time again people sighting in x amount of inches high at 50 or 100 yards only to see what should of been a deer in a freezer at 300 or 400 yards either missed or worse wounded. By all means use 1.5 inches high at 50 yards as a start but you still need to confirm what's going on beyond that at the distances you intend to hunt at .. anyway just my thoughts.
