Newly acquired Ruger M77 International

Yesterday I picked up this Ruger M77 International in .308 with a Leupold scope.. I am new to the forum and to Ruger. (Although, I have had a Mark III for a while) I know very little about this rifle and would like some input as to quality, reliability, etc.
Also, I would like to find the date of manufacture. Maybe someone could steer me in the right direction.
Any help would be appreciated.
BTW I got it for $470 OTD. Is that a fair price? Thanks

Welcome to the forum! If you go to the Ruger website there is a section that has production models and manuals. You can look thru there and see if you can find your serial number etc. It should also have the manufacture date. That is a fine looking rifle.

That is such a nice rifle. I can remember my Uncle showing me that rifle back about 1980 or so before I had ever shot a deer. I just knew the Euro-Cool styling and compact fire-power combined to make it something I liked.

I was very lucky to pick up a M77-MKII in 30.06

with the composite "canoe paddle" stock, for

500$ recently.

This rifle shoots as well as comparable rigs costing

twice as much.

Thumbs up Nice Find !!!

A tang safety M77 in a International Mannilicher with a Leupold scope for $470.00. OTD.....yea you got a great deal! Your rifle is a hard model to find so because of that will bring the value up! If I could find one like that with a OTD price I would say yes great price very nice. To me a Ruger M77 Tang safety model alone means some what more in value if it's in good condition great find Congrats!!! I would say yes a very fair price looks like your scope is also a 3-9x40, unless something is wrong with your rifle a Ruger International Mannilicher in .308 a desirable caliber.

If, as gqucool said, there is nothing wrong with this rifle, you made an exceptional purchase. I would expect to pay nearly twice that amount for that rifle in very good condition in my area. Good luck with that rifle. My M77 RSI is my favorite Ruger.

You did good! I have a Hawkeye Standard in 308... The 308 will do anything you need it to and Ruger bolt guns are the top guns in their class,,, plenty accurate and built like a tank!

The rear sight normally is screwed into the barrel, could be the rear sight was removed and screw plugs put in place. Thats what I would guess was done, I took my Ruger M77
Tang Safety in .270 and bought a Bishop's walnut stock years ago and turned mine into a Mannilcher I had a Williams front sight installed had the barrel cut down to 20 inch's & a steel end cap on the stock. I never installed a rear sight because this rifle was scoped all the time. I loved my rifle but nothing is as nice as a original Ruger M77 International. I had a small 3-9x32 scope installed on my Ruger. I am guessing after all was done this rifle weight was over 9 pounds!! I got the looks I wanted but it was too heavy, I eventually cut the stock down made it look like a M77 Light Weight rifle with the 20 inch barrel. After cutting it down the accuracy actually improved. Another one of my early blunders, ended up trading it for a very nice Remington 700 BDL in .243. My 3-9x32 scope that was on my Ruger M77 .270 now sits on my Remington 7600 .270 Win. This scope back 30 years ago I paid $50.00 for it a Tasco made in Japan or Korea not sure but a much better scope then the Tasco's made in China!!!

Very nice Buy , would have been great without the Leupold ...
The ser # comes after 84 and before 85 , but Rugers list doesn't have 78 prefix , 1984 started with 77 pre and 85 started with 79 prefix. Look on Rugers website and e-mail them ser# caliber and model and those pic's wouldn't hurt and they could get closer on date of shipping. I have an International Tanger in 250 sav and another Tanger with walnut stock also in 250 sav. You did good and hope you enjoy your new find.

At that price, you stole the gun. Run....and don't look back.
