Question 308 Win vs. 7.62x51

I've read many confusing threads regarding the interchangability of the above cartridges but haven't gotten any real answer.

The question i have is if i buy a Hawkeye in 308 Win can i shoot 7.62x51 through it?

And here's why. The civilian .308 Winchester is actually slightly hotter than the 7.62x51 NATO. This is the reverse of the .223 Rem/.556x45 NATO situation. So, if you're chambered for the hotter round, you're good to go.

According to Springfield (my M1A) there is an overlap in head space dimensions. If you have a gun properly head spaced (middle of the overlap), you can shoot them interchangeably. - - At least that is what Springfield says in their manual.

As noted above, that IS different than the 5.56 v .223. I have a Savage model 12-BVSS that hates 5.56 (hard to chamber) but loves .223, so I am careful about those.
