Just did it again! Bought another "crap" Ruger. After having such wonderful luck with my Hawkeye African in .375 (it is accurate, does not need any trigger work, nor action polishing), I was about to order another African in .300 Win (which I will do), when a NIB .308 77 Hawkeye RSI (Mannlicher stocked) was staring at me from behind a glass case. Had to have it! Haven't taken it out of the shop yet (bring it home this week), but the action appears smooth and the trigger creep free and light. These Hawkeyes are becoming an addiction! Crap? I don't think so!! The African and the RSI are just so cool! And, the quality and workmanship is definitely there! Ruger is definitely making a fine product.

What really put people off with Ruger is when they get a lemon. Ruger states "For the Compact models, the accuracy is 2", 3 shot group at 50 yards. The average accuracy for the standard M77 is 1.25"-1.75" at 50 yards." Guys put out their hard earned money and if they get a bad barrel the response is 4 inch groups at 100 is within spec. This gives Ruger a terrible reputation. I actually think this Ruger policy is their problem. Companies like Weatherby and Tikka state 1-1.5 inch for their guns and even though folks may not get that every time they figure it is possible. Maybe Ruger needs to step up and state a reasonable accuracy spec and stand behind it.
Note:My Compact 243 shoots sub inch 3 shot groups @ 100 yards all the time, it is a true sub inch gun. I have others that struggle with 1 inch but they are fine for hunting.
I'm picking up another compact in 308, so I hope I get another tack driver

I like Ruger rifles, but of the scores of them I've shot over the years, nary a one has been a tack driver. I own two now. Both are accurate enough for deer hunting, neither will ever likely be my favorites. Maybe I'm just not lucky when it come to Ruger rifles. I can say, I've been well pleased with the handgun accuracy.

I really like my M77 in 6mm Remington and used to shoot deer with it until I realized all of my shots were short range so now I shoot deer and hogs with leveraction Marlins. A friend used it to take a buck at long range in an Alabama green field. I now shoot it at water jugs set up about 300 yards away. Oh yes, a few days ago I used it to blow up a destructive beaver with a 55 grain Nosler BT! Now I'm wanting a 77/22. For some reason I've always wanted a .22 bolt action repeater and I've decided the Ruger is the one I want.

My Ruger's accuracy is good enough for me. It shoots 1 1/4 " groups with 130 handloads and 1 1/2 " groups with Winchester 150 power-points. It sure doesn't shoot patterns like everyone says it should. I just saw on another forum that they're bashing Rugers, and one member said, "Ruger's shoot patterns, not groups". |

| So at 300 yards, this would work out to be a 10" group! According to that a hit on a prairie dog at that range would be pure luck. And I was hitting prairie dogs at 300 yards VERY consistantly; almost every shot was a hit. This with a 2003 M77 Mk. II SS w laminate stock 223.
I was using Fiocchi ammo with Hornady 50 Gr. V-Max bullets. Once I learned NOT to hold for the 15 MPH crosswind, that is . . .
Yep, a dead-on hold at 300 yards with that crosswind resulted in consistant hits.

There is no way Ruger's shoot that bad of groups! They'd have to be a smoothbore to shoot that poorly (slightly exaggerated). My Ruger will shoot 1 1/4 MOA with 130 handloads and 1 1/2 MOA with Winchester 150 power points.

I have more rugers in the safe than anything else. Two of hose are m77's stainless.. one 7mm mag and 30-06, I just picked up the 06, but the 7mm has taken deer at almost 500 yards and with my handloads will connect three holes at 200 yards...With any rifle you have to find or load the ammo it likes. I cant think of any factory gun I have bought that is a tack driver out of the box with factory ammo.

If I do my part the 77 will shoot better than moa.
Frank | I guarantee you don't stop at 3.
The thing I like about Ruger is the variety.
I love my Glock, but the only real difference between models is the caliber, and barrel length.
Ruger has more to choose from which has resulted in more Rugers following me home than any other.
There's .22's for plinking, autos and snubbies for concealed carry. No matter what your preferred carry setup, they have something to suit your needs. Rifles for hunting.
The only area they've allowed competitors to dominate virtually unchallenged is shot guns.

My first rifle was a M77 tang in .06 bought in 1982 for $179. I still own it and can shoot clover leafs with it. I take care of my guns, so is in 95+% condition. Someday I will pass it to my son and hopefully to his son after that.

I just tested my Ruger M77 in .270, with 150 grain NBT's and it shot sub-moa. It is finicky, but with premium 150-s it is a tack driver.

I bought an M77 new in 86, 300 win mag. It will consistantly make clover leafs at 100 yards with 165 grain boat tails. The most fun is with my handloaded sabots. 52 grain boat tails at 5200 feet per second and no kick. I have consistantly shot a 9 inch steel plate at 1000 yards with them. Dont try them with hollow points, they disintegrate at those speeds. My brothers Parker Hale 300 win mag doesnt even come close to the accuracy of my M77. I must continue to get more toys, I only have 19 right now. 7 of which are handguns and 3 of those are Rugers. 2 of my rifles are Rugers.

My first high power was a Model 700 BDL in 30-06. Too much gun to target shoot with, and ventilate an occasional whistlepig. Traded to a Model 70 Varmint in .243. Absolutely perfect, beautiful gun. At the same time, my brother bought a Model 77 in .243, and it shoots just as good, and is just as pretty as my Model 70. I love Ruger, and would own a Model 77 with no reservations.
