You'll hear that trash on some sites. I actually posted groups shot with my lowly little 77/22 on one rimfire site and was accused of everything from lying to beating my wife. The kool-aid drinkers just follow whatever seems to be the current "in thing" to shoot. All of my Rugers have shot well from the start. I absolutely love the M77 trigger design because of it's simplicity of construction. Anyone that can change the oil in his own vehicle has enough ability to lighten the trigger down to a crisp 1-2lbs and it can be done without the need of spring kits, shims, ball-point pen springs, kotex straps ect... I have plenty of different guns other than my Rugers but the Rugers are my go-to guns when I am going in the woods. They fit in the hand like they were made to. No .22 clips protruding out the bottom like it was an afterthought on the part of the manufacterer. I enjoy being able to buy a Ruger and know it was made here by workers that can earn a realistic wage and benifits. It seems some have a warped desire to see one of the few remaining American gun makers fail. The latest fad seems to be the thinking that you have to buy a european gun to be "in" at the range. I've nothing against those guns but if you see alot of guns on a regular basis you find out quickly that you can buy a turd from anywhere. My only regret is that I cannot afford to buy more Rugers than I presently have.

All mine are excellent shooters. My 77/22 had a really bad trigger but I sent it back and they fixed it for me free.

I think they are the best made, best value in a domestic manufacture. I'm not knocking the other guys (I like Remy too) but Rugers are all steel and I appreciate that in a modern gun.

Once upon a time I had a 77R in .270 that shot .75" groups and it was bone stock. Not a thing done to it, no free floating, trigger work, nothing, nada. It liked 130 grain Speer SBT's and IMR 4350.
A friend has the heavy barrel varmit model in 22-250. I shot a .380" 3 shot group out of that gun with 2 shots in the same hole. I actually thought something was VERY wrong with the load because I told my friend that I know I didn't pull any of the shots. He noticed one hole was just elongated enough to verify the second shot through it. Again a bone stock gun.
I think it's just luck of the draw today. Both of the guns I mention here are older models. I haven't seen one in years that I actually liked the trigger on. But they have a decent strength action and if you are willing to tinker (may not have to other than the lawyer trigger) they will shoot with most any of the offerings today.

The old adage about people believing a lie if this same lie is repeated over and over definitely applies here. I have not had anyone tell me to my face that Rugers are "crap" but I've read some comments to that effect on the internet (not on this forum). IMO Rugers are an exceptional value for the money. In fact I'd wager that, since Ruger began making their own barrels, a typical Ruger bolt action is on a par with every other mass produced rifle regarding accuracy. They were never designed to be benchrest rifles. However, for the average hunter, irregardless of what was hunted and the terrain, your typical Ruger can "take a licking and keep on ticking". I know of several other people who own Ruger bolt actions. To a person they describe their Rugers as boringly reliable, sturdy and as accurate as they need to be to get the job done every time, if the hunter/shooter does his/her part. The trigger on the MK II series may not be the best but it's not cost me a game animal yet. From what I've read, the triggers on the Hawkeye are better. So, it appears Ruger is working on that. I guess what I'm trying to say is that for the money, the average hunter (and his/her direct descendants) will be very well served for a lifetime by a Ruger bolt action rifle. So, let the armchair quarterbacks knock Ruger because that just leaves a better selection for you and me. To put what I've said in perspective, I am what my Grandchildren would call "long in the tooth". Ive tried many different types of rifles by different manufacturers. However, I keep coming back to Ruger. For me that says it all.

I've had my M77, in 30-06, since around '76. I have always appreciated that rifle, in many, many ways. That being said, I grew up shooting competitively with .22 target rifles, and appreciated the trigger on the Rem 700's more than my M77. Yet, the adjustability of the trigger on that old M77 was a nice feature, and helped with it's "shootability." In regards to handling, I MUCH preferred the M77 over the Rem 700. Those old stocks that were used on the older tang-safety M77's came to the shoulder, and the rifle to point, fast and smooth!
Accuracy? With Nosler 165 grain ballistic tips loaded to around 2800 fps= 1/2" @ 100 yards, consistently. (After glass-bedding the stock)

my dad has a 77 in 22-250 with a leupold 4x12 scope on it, thing's ridiculously nice.
grandpa has 77/22 mag, 77 30-06, 77 243, and a couple others. he was just a big ruger fan. most of his guns were rugers. i shot the 243 and 30-06, and took my first deer with the 243. both are DAMN nice rifles, incredibly accurate.
my only complaint was that he had a habit of customizing the stocks, and the 30-06 scope was set far back with the stock cut a bit short, as he was smaller even than me (i'm 5'7" 140lbs), and i got scoped in the eye taking a shot at a nice buck in high school. i was bleeding all over the place, and had a black eye for two weeks. not the rifle's fault tho.

I have a closet full of them ranging from 338 to 220 swift and never had a problem with any of them.
I have a 300 win mag referred to as a FREAK by my brothers. I shot a 9/16 group with it at 200 yards and then a 5/8 group at 300. They just shook their heads and said that not the way a factory rifle should shoot. So from then on it was classified as a FREAK.

With all the brands I have grown up around, I feel that my Ruger's are better made & the 77's are even a better mark agains't cousins Rem & Win.....Personal Preference I reckon.....
The 25-06 with Redfield (non-special) 3X9, have drilled all kinds of critters.....I have 6 of the77's models & am sure they will work just fine, when I am done & gone........
Peace !

I have some I have never fired. The ones I have, they have been more then accurate enough for me. They aren't a target rifle but the weren't designed to be one. I don't get to shoot like I used to so I've gotten out of practice. I've shot many a deer with my M-77 in 7 mag. The wife uses a Ruger M-77 Compact in 7mm08. It's done everything she needed it to do.
I have more then I'll ever use. I don't regret for a minute buying all the M-77's I have. I have one Hawkeye in 300 Mag and it's never been fired. It has the Ruger Camo stock on it. I heard it was a special run.

Years ago, I had a Browning single shot 1885 in .25-06. Very accurate. I felt the caliber was a little weak for long-range muley shooting. Changed to a #1-B in .270 Win. Accurate!!. Now, lately, I bought a .223 Ruger Hawkeye laminated Compact. That little 16 1/2" barrel is really accurate.!! Prompted me to go for a Hawkeye Safari in .375 Ruger. What a slender, beautiful and balanced gun! First shot out of it w/open sights was at a plastic pop bottle at around 50 yds. Dead center. Won't hear me trashing Rugers. I have had a lot of guns in my lifetime - foreign and American, and I hold Ruger among the best guns out there.
