New Ruger Precision Rifle

This is a discussion on New Ruger Precision Rifle within the Ruger Bolt Action forums, part of the Rifle & Shotgun Forum category; I put an order in for one in 308. I hope Ruger is pumping them out with all the publicity they have generated....

I got mine

Now I need to wait on some scope rings to come in.
I didn't take into account the full length picatinny would require some very tall rings and didn't have any that tall laying around in 30mm.

Nice! Tell us again what caliber? Do you have a scope picked out already? (Sorry if you already told us earlier but I'm too lazy to poke back through the thread.)

Thanks, Wave.

I have a Sightron III 6-24x50 for it that I used to have on another rifle.
6.5 Creedmoor.

Sweet! Looking forward to seeing a pic of the assembled rig and a range report. The 6.5 is the one I'm waiting on. I don't have any appropriate glass available so I'll be shopping for something (and that's where the real money will go.)

You and me both!
Today looks to be another perfect day. It's killing me that I didn't think to order some tall scope mounts while I was waiting on the rifle.

So how tall do you need? I'm guessing any standard picatinney rail mount works, right? Will one set work from 100 yards to 1,600 yards or do you use one set for say 100 to 800 yards and something different for 800 to 1,600? Probably a dumb question but I really don't know much about this long range game.

I don't do long range myself, which is why my 338 Lapua was expendable (trade fodder). I've read the 338L doesn't stabilize until past 100 yards, which is another reason I wanted something different. Something that will fit in more with the 100 yd rifle shooting I usually do.
The Ruger Precision comes with a 20 degree cant picatinny, which is supposed to give you enough elevation adjustment for long range. My Savage BA110 had that, too.
Unlike my Savage though, Ruger's rail runs past the end of the scope, so my old mounts would not work. They were 1/4" low mounts. The Ruger looks to need 7/8" mounts for my 50mm objective to clear the rail. That's the base measurement. Some mounts measure to the center of the ring. All I could find locally were cantilever mounts for an AR that I thought would look stupid.

My friend and I each bought one in 243. I like the ballistics of that round. We were shooting steel at 800 yards. We also brought along a scar 16 223 and a scar 17 308 & a Trg-22 Sako in 308. After shooting all of them I preferred the RPR in 243 however I would like to try the CM for comparison.

My LGS told me they were not going to order any in .243.
I guess popular opinion in these parts is .243 is a hunting round and the RPR wouldn't lend itself well to a woods gun, which is what we have around here.

How was the 100 yds accuracy in .243?

We have only taken them out once. This Monday we are going out again. We actually never shot it a 100 yrds we began at 325 on a 18 inch gong and worked out to 800.

One of the LGS here is only ordering in 308. It's a mindset thing - they already carry some precision rifles in 308 and they assume 308 is THE precision shooting cartridge. Likewise 243 is generally considered a hunting cartridge here. The other shop in town was already on the same page as I was - 6.5 CM and that's what we're trying to get in. Any one of them is likely fine for most folks and arguably I should have gone with either 308 or 243 as I already have rifles for both plus dies and supplies. But no - 6.5 is calling my name.

What scope and mounts did you use? I'm more interested in the mounts just to compare to what I ordered.

I have a Leupold vx-3 4.5-14 mounted on 6 hole tactical weaver rings. My friend has a Vortex Rzr scope and I do not know what rings he is using.
