I just picked up a 77/22 in .22 hornet from a local gun shop. It has a simmons 8 point 3x9x32 scope on it. traded an old savage 110EL 30.06 and $200.00 for it. I haven't shot it yet but I can't wait. I love my 10/22 and i am excited to to see how the 77/22 compares.

I bought a 77/22RH as my first rifle many moons ago. I love it to bits and can shoot it better than any other rifle I have ever used. It has the standard walnut stock and blued 20" sporter weight barrel. I have taken clean kills out as far as 300 yards too.

I had it reamed out to the Kilbourn Hornet and in K-Hornet form it can shoot sub MOA 5 shot groups with ease, using my preferred loads of either 40gr or 50gr Nosler BT's in front of either 12 or 11 grains of ADI AR2205 (IMR4227).

I also had a trigger job done and it breaks cleanly at 1kg or a smidge over 2lbs.

Now, a K-Hornet is something that could be a lot of fun.

However, at this point will just need to be happy with my Clark Custom 77/22.

Keep em coming!

I've had a 77/22 for many years. It was the first .22 I got that would shoot under an inch at 50 yards. My only complaint is the heavy trigger. Mine is around 6lbs, and not being IOWEGAN, I have not "messed" with it. I wish I could find a kit (a-la the 10/22) that would lighten up the trigger.

Still a very nice rifle.

Pat -inco,

The triggers are out there.

If you don't find one anywhere else, go to Rimfire Central forum and they will tell you everything you want to hear and more.

Like here, a good group of people.

Keep em coming!

new 77/22 target problem

I've just bought this rifle, and have a problem with shell ejection. the empty and loaded round stays in the bolt and will not eject. Anyone know why?

Shoofly,

From your post, I'm not really sure where the problem is.

If it is like it sounds, the case or cartridge IS being withdrawn from the chamber but is then not being released from the bolt.

If this is the situation, check to make sure the small protrusion (ejector) behind the rotory mag has not been damaged.

The double hooks should be clean and undamaged, and if so they will draw the cartridge/case from the chamber and the protrusion will kick the case out when the bolt is drawn back to the stop.

If looking into the bolt opening with the bolt open and to the rear, look for the ejector tab to be on the left side, just behind the rotory mag.

If on the other hand, the problem is the cartridge/case NOT being withdrawn from the chamber, make sure the two extractor hooks are moving freely and fully and have not been damaged.

Keep us posted as to your findings.

Good to hear the rifle is doing you well.

Is Springfield still rural enough to be able to find places to shoot?

Lived in Salem for a number of years as a boy, leaving in about 1957 for Eastern Oregon where we first lived 7 miles from the next place down the road.

Plenty of places to shoot there, like off the back house steps.

Lived in Pullman, Washington for quite awhile - found a "Washington" girl I couldn't live without -, until the kids were mostly gone from home and then "got out of Dodge" and into Ideeeeeeho.

Can't shoot right at the house - in the city limits of Deary, Ideeeeeho - , but last year and the year before, took deer about 10 minutes walk from the house.

This morn'in had two deer in the lower yard - about 7am.

Both my son and son-in-law came to visit and took nice bucks this Fall.

Son's had a 21" outside measurement and he saw two much larger bucks in the couple days before, but couldn't get on them.

Anyway, have you tried any of the pricy match stuff in your .22?

I figured with the Clark Custom and it's Walther barrel, I wanted to see just what it would do with the really good ammo.

For awhile, I go to a store and buy a single box of whatever they had that I didn't have, just to find out what shot well. Sometimes, some surprisingly cheep stuff shot surprisingly well.

Have some of the old Fed. match ammo like the one they used in the Olympics that really shoots VERY well! To bad they don't make this ammo any more. They say it is still the good stuff, but NOT!!

The sporting goods shop that had the Fed Gold medal match, had 2 or 3 cartons of it when I bough my carton, Should have bought it all, but have most of the brick stashed back just in case I need to whip up on some body.

Some of the Wolf match ammo does well as does Lapua.

And of course, the Eley EPS is very good.

Don't shoot that pricy ammo all the time, but it is nice to throw some bragg'in groups to post on the wall!

If your look'in for info on any of the .22s, what works for mak'in them shoot etc. go to Rimfire Central. Those folk take their .22s very serious!!

Keep em coming!

Squirrel Assassin,

Will give you some figures for 5 shot groups. All shot at 50yds, off a bench & bags at 9 powder..

CCI Blazers (these are solids) 1/2"
CCI Mini Mag Solid 5/8"
CCI Mini Mag HP 11/16"
Win Super X solid 21/32"
Win Super X Hp 7/8"
Win Super X Power Point 15/32"
Bulk Win HP 1280 fps 3/4"

Have only shot one group at 100yds, and that put 9 out of 10 under an inch.

With match ammo, it is not unusual to be seeing ragged one hole groups - 5 shots at 50 yds, and the norm with ammo it likes is sub 1/2" for 10 shots.

Shot that one day when I was out shooting center fire, but I really don't know what the rifle will do at that range and I just haven't spent the bench time at 100yds that I have at 50.

Love mine. Used it to teach my kids about guns. It really helps when they hit what they aim for. I have lost the number of squirrels and other small game it has taken over the years.

When my son and I go shooting, we usually end up shooting the M77/22 and SR22(pistol) the most. Usually 555+ rounds.

Enjoy it for a long time.

I too was going with Clark, but was told that if I was going to shoot HI Vel Ammo that they would need to know this first so that they(Clark) could lengthen the chamber. Instead I found a nice deal on some Shilen Barrels at the same price as Clark.

Interesting Squirrel Assassin!

I'll take your word for that, as I was not in on the ordering for this Clark Custom.

A fellow in or close to Colville, Washington ordered the rifle from Clark - I have the invoice - and when he got the rifle he decided it was too heavy.

So, he took it into a G.S. in Spokane and traded it off for a .17 of some kind.

To each his own, I think this is a much better rifle.

Anyway, as near as I could tell, the rifle was still new. The rings looked like they hadn't been removed from the package.

The rifle cost the first guy, $785 delivered from Clark and I bought it new for 600.

It has impressed me from the first group, and I have had no issues with standard or High Velocity ammo. So, from your post, I assume the fellow must have ordered it with the proper chamber.

If that is the case, it would be interesting to see how much better, if any, it would shoot with the tighter chamber. Guess considering how it now shoots, WOW might be the term to use.
