worlds biggest numbnut

what im about to share will undoubtedly compel many to respond with countless witty statements regarding my IQ, how lucky I am, etc. so ill do you all a favor and say. Yes I'm an idiot and yes im lucky. I also ask only those that actually have helpful information respond....

ok so purchased a new SS 10/22 takedown about a month ago then added a Leupold 2x7-28mm scope...life was good. Accuracy wasnt quite where i wanted so i went ahead and purchased a universal laser bore sight and headed to the range. After attaching the correct arbor piece for the rifle and inserting it into the end of the barrel, i gave a few twists to make it snug and began to zero the scope. (here's the stupid part) I then proceeded to fire not one but two rounds before realizing I never removed the the bore site...(pause for laughter)

what im now left now is a laser bore sight i cant remove because the aluminum post is most likely fused with the barrel, oh and two rounds jammed up behind it.

just to add insult to injury Ruger wont sell just a barrel and according to customer service i would have to send the entire rifle in just for them to decide if it can be fixed. WTH the receiver is fine, and living in Cali dont really want to jump through required hoops and waiting period just so they can verify my barrel is toast. So any ideas on traking down a barrel?

Numbnut, I feel your pain and I learn from it.

Consider cutting the barrel short by small sections until the obstruction is gone. An inch at a time maybe. Now, rifles have a minimum barrel length requirement that you may fall under after barrel repair. If that's the case, have a good gunsmith weld an "extension" onto the barrel. By extension, I am thinking flash hider or faux suppressor, if your state allows those items. If nothing else, a piece of SS tubing tig welded onto the end will constitute barrel length to satisfy the demands of the law.

I hope this works out for you either way. Do some research on cutting a barrel so you don't end up with as many problems as you solve.

Good luck

Welcome to the forum. Glad your ok, the rifle can be fixed. I'd swallow my pride and send it back to Ruger. Good luck with it.

Welcome from East Texas. That sounds like something I would do. Take it to a gunsmith and let him fix you up.

Epic fail! Have you tried removing the barrel from the receiver and running a rod down the barrel to push it out the end?

Or....If you are willing to wait for a backorder, go to MidwayUSA

Ruger Barrel Ruger 10/22 Long Rifle Standard Contour 1 16 Twist 18-1/2

and order a replacement barrel (if you are wanting the standard contour), for $39.99.
I'd do this in a heart-beat if it was me.
Welcome to the forum by the way.

He has a takedown. His forearm won't attach to my knowledge. Probably other considerations too.

Me, too. You should also be able to find a used stock barrel, even cheaper, since so many folks do mods on their 10/22s and have replaced the barrel. Should be plenty of old stock barrels, around. Check that famous online auction site, if you know what I mean. Be a much quicker and easier fix than trying to rescue your old barrel.

Let me also say that I'm glad you weren't hurt. Some folks have not walked away from such a thing.

Welcome to the forum from North Dakota. How can you claim the title of being "the worlds biggest numbnut" ?? That title is officially owned by Joe-"the brain"-Biden.

The new TD barrels are not compatible with Standard 10/22 barrels. Take down barrels mount totally different ... not even close to a standard barrel so forget trying to replace it with anything but a TD barrel.

This ^. And I doubt there are any spares in the accessories pipeline yet.

Were it me, I would bite the bullet and send it to Ruger. At least you know it will be repaired correctly in that case.

And kudos for having the nerve to post this. Many wouldn't.
