10/22 Takedown sight issue....

Hey all,

I have a buddy who has a takedown, can't get it sighted in.... When I look down the sights, the front sight appears to be 5 to 10 degrees off center. And the rifle shoots high and left at 100 yards. Is there a way to adjust the front sight? the rifle locks in tight when you put it together, and takes down fine... I don't have alot of experience with ruger rifles, (i do own a .223 M77 Mark 2, it's a beast)....But most of mine are the S & W 15/22, Marlin .22 and such, and have never seen a front sight "off center". Other than that the rifle is a great design

He's right. You have to find where you are hitting at 25 yrds. Normally you get farther off as you move out in distance. At 25 yrds you shouldn't be off much. Don't change your set up as you move out in distance. If possible bench rest the rifle and find out where you are hitting (on paper if possible) at 25 yrds. You don't want to be ricochetting off something and then hitting a target. If that happens, you will never get it sighted in correctly. If you still don't see anything at 25, move in to 15 (if possible).

I guess I worded my post wrong... I have sighted in many rifles before. But I have never seen the blade of the front sight off center before. I also have never used a takedown rifle, so I am assuming it is all going together correctly, it feels tight, no wiggle in the barrel. but the front sight is not centered, it is canted to the left. The owner of the rifle bought a punch to knock the front sight over, that kinda scares me....good idea or not?

At 25 yards, by "nothing" I meant shots were on paper, but way left and high...I moved back because he said he had "dialed" it in at 100 yrds, but it is nowhere close...everything is left, i got the high part fixed adjusting the rear sight. If aimed far right, hits center, aimed center, hits way left. leading me to believe it is the front sight.. Like I stated Ihave never used a takedown, so I am a newbie at this rifle, but own several different .22 rifles and never have seen a front sight "canted"

This is a long shot but..... One of the members here found that he had the adjusting nut on the take down mechanism all the way out instead of tightened properly. This gave him a loose feeling but could also make the sites not line up. Can you double check the takedown mechanism for proper installation?

Fireball... I thought of that actuallly, after the initial shoot, I took it apart and backed it all the way off and started over using the manual as a guideline (like I said the takedown is new to me). The gun goes together fantastic, and breaks down great. It feels tight, no wiggle. but sighting straight down the sights the front sight is off fractionally, could this be a manufacturing issue?

on the face of the receiver when barrel is off, there is a plate held on with hex screws.
That has to be tweaked in order to get both receiver and barrel to alingn perfectly.

I'll have mine in about 2 weeks. Hope its OK out of then box !

The bullet always crosses the line of sight twice on any rifle. For 22 rimfire I usually sight in at about 17yards or about 17-20 depending on were I am at for rest and backstop. Take a look at the stock where the two pieces come into alignment. Are they perfectly aligned? Rimfire Central has several posts on this and how to make the necessary adjustment for alignment if they are off a little.

I think I know what you mean nschwn08... when assembled, the sights on the "receiver" subassembly do not line up with the front sight post on the "barrel" subassembly.

When fully seated (and with tension adjusted properly) instead of seeing the front sight at the 6 o'clock position though the rear sight, the front sight can be seen at more of a "5:50" position.

My "fix" was to abandon the irons altogether, but seeing schutzruger's post, below, maybe I should try to adjust the hex screws to see if I can bring the front sight into alignment with the rear sight.

Hopefully this will solve the problem, but I am still going to look for someone, locally, to do a mod like this:

Looking at the pictures on the Ruger web site, the takedown's front and rear sights are both on the barrel and do not separate when the rifle is taken down. This means that if the front sight seems out of plane (i.e. angled) compared to the rear sight it is not a problem with the way the rifle goes together or any adjustments related to takedown. In fact, you should be able to see the problem when looking down the barrel even when the rifle is in two parts. That means the barrel itself is defective or the front sight needs to be repositioned (not sure if it is on a band that can move or if it is permanently positioned).

In any event, if this is a new gun call Ruger for support & repair.
