The bang for the buck is in the auto release...the last round hold open looks expensive...especially when you consider the mag compatibility...

I am in the habit of locking the bolt open AFTER the mag has been ejected...

Honestly...I don't see it as that big of a deal but not having to fumble with it to release the bolt is a pretty big deal imo...
Ruger even designed the 10/22 so it could be dry fired because they knew with the bolt not staying open after the last round people would try for that 11th shot.

I would hate to have an auto loader that couldn't be dry fired...

The bolt hold open is an interesting product...I just don't see it as being very important...it would be different if one could load the magazine from the top like an SKS...

However...if you pull the trigger and it doesn't squeeze as is now it means you have a jamb...knowing that right away is more helpful imo...

Whereas if the trigger pulls and nothing goes bang...eject mag...if mag has ammo you have a live round in the chamber...if it is empty then you have to manually pull bolt back to make sure the chamber is empty but you don't have to lock it open to replace the empty mag with a full one...regardless of whether the bolt is open or closed once you replace an empty mag with a full one you still have to manually release the bolt...

I just don't see any practical advantage to that...

Not having the fumble with the bolt release to go into battery is a very big deal to me...

In the case of the 10/22 the empty mag hold open is not worth much... if anything... imo

IMO...I think a lever release and more factory 10 round mags are money better spent...the lever release is sweet and lets you drop the mag without delay or moving your grip hand...it is just so natural and when you have that the need for a last round hold open seems very unimportant...at least it does to me...

Thanks for the info and the link. After looking at it, I agree with you. Just having the bolt stay open without fumbling is the better way to go. If they other one didn't require modified mags, it would be nice, but it's not worth it for the cost involved and then not have regular magazines work with my rifle.

I'd personally love to have last shot hold open, if it would work w/ modified BX-25 magazines. That said, buying & installing a ~$10 Volquartsen automatic bolt release is one of the simplest & most useful mods one can make to a 10/22. I always lock the bolt open after I'm finished firing, anyway, & the ability to slap in a new magazine & chamber the first round w/out having to fumble around w/ the damn bolt lock is a blessing!

Plus one except the lazy.......

I just don't find a problem with the factory release the way it comes.
