First 10/22 Build Barrell Opinion

Hello I just recently picked up my 10/22 and have began shoot it a ton. I was thinking about putting a new barrel on it to increase accuracy. I don't know very much about them. I would like to make a tack driver for 50 yd shots. I am looking to spend less than 250 for the barrel. Ive been looking at the Kidd fluted match barrel. Am I on the right track? All help is appreciated.

I have heard nothing but good reviews on the KIDD barrels, however personally I can't comment.

I have a Green Mountain barrel, and it works wonders for me and at $125 I couldn't be more happy with the setup. I can get a quarter size group at 50 yards all day, and in some cases dime size if you really try.

It is ultimately up to you as it is your build, but from the research I have gathered the Green Mountain is the best bang for your buck.

Good luck, good shooting.

P.S. Everything else on my build is from KIDD though; Bolt Buffer, Receiver Pin Kit, Auto Bolt Release, Extended Mag Release, Trigger Job Kit, Cocking Assembly, etc..

Highly recommend their quality of parts!

Kidd is indeed tops! However, you can do 50 yd shooting for a bit less if that's straining your budget. Also, it's not just installing a new barrel and having it be a do-all, instant 50yd tack-driver. You'll be wanting a refinement of the trigger, GOOD optics and GOOD ammo for the best results you can get from that Kidd barrel. Cheaping out on one of these is making that Kidd kinda a waste as it'll never be at the level it could be.

For shooting 50 yards, or even longer distances, Green mountain is great, they are very cheap, and are very good quality barrels.

Thanks for the feed back. Can you be more specific on the green mountain barrel's. Is this the barrel that will get the job done?

19.5" Heavy Fluted Muzzle Barrel

I am going to pull of my scope from my 30.06 and put it on my 10/22. Now what about economical triggers?

Thanks for the help.

Power Custom Pre-Travel Adjustable Hammer Sear Ruger 10/22

Initially I replaced my hammer with the VQ target hammer and it cut the pull weight approximately in half which was a huge improvement but the slop in the trigger was no better than before and definitely not good enough...

So I got the PC adjustable sear and drilled/tapped my factory (aluminum) trigger for a 4mmx8mm set screw for over-travel stop...

At this point I can honestly say I would prefer the factory weight pull with the slop removed rather than a sloppy but much lighter pull...

With kit above you get both together in one...

If you have a pre-plastic gun with metal trigger it's easy to do your own...if you have a plastic trigger you are better off getting either a PC or VQ trigger with over-travel stop already installed...

Anyway a DIY with drop-in adjustable parts is a $100 cost...less if you modify you factory trigger...

The only thing left is the creep...don't know what...if anything I can do or get on the cheap to eliminate that but my guess is that stoning the sear/hammer will both lighten the pull and reduce the creep...haven't done it...can't say...

Lots of people say the Kidd is the best but high priced...most of the others are high priced...Hornet has some much lower priced offerings...not sure what you get for the $$$ from any of them outside of the Kidd...

Anyway that is the low-budget way to make a huge improvement but the end result may not be good enough for you and the if you want the best of the best in the end better to put that money towards the premium product of your choice...

Also if you want to keep the weight down with a 20" match grade bull barrel take a look at the whistle pig barrels...they also come compensated if you like that...

Not so. The polymer housing are actually made to a bit tighter tolerances and the Kidd trigger kit is made specifically for these. Like the Kidd assembly, these kits are being judged as the best out there for the DIY route. Gives a simply fantastic result. They can work with the alloy housing but it's no guarantee as they had less consistent tolerances.

For the most part, choose the one you like. The weighted end is more for balance than anything and the fluting...just a visual more than anything else. What minute weight reduction is so slight that is it is indeed a big deal, well, maybe bench shooting is the direction so weight isn't an issue anyways.

Curious how the budget allows for a $250 barrel yet it's a "economical" trigger that wanted. Match components. That Kidd barrel is a waste if you're gonna skimp on the trigger (and the rest of the build). Kinda like getting that big fancy engine for your car but going with a cheap transmission.

It really depends on your preference as this is your build and you shouldn't be swayed by others opinion. From my standpoint, the fluted option doesn't give any performance difference or any that can be noticed. It is just for appearance...

A lot of people like to get the 18" barrels since they are a bit lighter than the 20" and after 18" there isn't much difference between accuracy. I have the 20" Stainless non-fluted barrel and it has been a great option for me.

As far as a trigger option, I can only vouch for the KIDD Trigger Job Kit which is around $89.00 and makes a world of difference. However, I would pair it with the KIDD Receiver Pin Kit as once you dissemble the trigger guard the stock pins become a bit loose, especially the bolt buffer which I switched out for a KIDD Bolt Buffer as well.

Again, these are just my opinions and information gathered from the forum members and BlkHawk73 has been a HUGE help.

Enjoy the build and good shooting!

Back on the Green Mountain subject. The one you were looking at is one of their top end Weighted Target models. Another option on their page are the Sporter models. They are very good for the money and have a Bentz Chamber and Target Rifling. You can get them in Black Or Stainless. Fluted or Non Fluted. 16" 18" 20" 24" 28".

Hope this helps, Max

I have the 18" Black Non Fluted. It is very Accurate, i can get a group the size of a quarter at fifty yards.Or if you wanted Stainless or Fluted you could also get that.

By far the best value in a Bull Barrel. In my Opinion!
