Looking to buy a 10/22 in the upcoming months

Im fairly new to guns, and i'd like one just to take to an outdoor range and mess around with. Doesn't need to be anything super fancy, just a fun plinker. I see so many different options and it's all a bit overwhelming.

Get a plain old 10/22 they are great. You can customize a piece at a time as you find stuff you like. I am guessing 80% of the customization you see is to satisfy what the owner wants it to look like. 20% is performance base.

So i could go to say a dicks or something and get a base 10/22 and it'll be fine? Or are those really bottom barrel rifles? I really would just love to go out to a 100 yard range and shoot stuff with a .22 seems like fun.

The Ruger 10-22 is a fine rifle. I have a 3X-9X scope on mine, old eyes, and I can tear the middle out of a 100 yard sight in target without fail. Over the years I have owned several 10-22's, the one I have now is stainless with a composite stock. I have owned the plain jane, blue with wood stock many times and although they are not as trick as some of the ones that people accessorise, they still are tack drivers, at least out to 100 yards. Especially fun to shoot tracers out of mine after it gets dark. Get you a 10-22, you will love it.

yes, or wallyworld or any other store selling the 10/22s
the base model with the "wood" stock, black receiver and barrel will serve you well for years. And you can usually find some sales every 3-4 months or so. I haven't watched lately, but we use to catch them around here for 20-30bux or get a 10-20% coupon in the mail around hunting season.

From there, you can leave it be and shoot it stock if your just plinking..
or if you want to pull more of the potential out of it, you can slowly start making mods.
The 10/22 is one rifle you can leave be, or take it as far as you want, or any place in between.

I have my fav things to do to them for pulling more out of 'em , falling short of changing out the barrel/receiver/bolt.

100yds is starting to push it for a little light weight 22 projectile, on a windy day... but doable as others have mentioned... on a still or light wind day you'll have a blast at 100yds.

IMHO , One of the biggest things with a scope on a 10/22 for most people that I've come across at events, is the mounts and the scope getting high up off the receiver and above a repeatable sight plane / check weld. So if you do get a scope, try and get the lowest mounts you can. For a good check weld, you still may need a check rest/pad.

There's a couple of $100 rim fire scopes out there, more old school with smaller diameter lens, and they can lay lower on the 10/22, and with low mounts minimize the total height. Still higher than the iron sites.. but a lot better than many of the cheap add on combo's from the retail stores with the tall mounts and huge diameter lenses.

Don't chinz on the scope... but don't need to spend 200bux either.

These work great on the 10/22 when scoped.

I have two Ruger 10-22's. Both were purchased at gun auctions here in Indiana.

The 'plain vanilla' is a wood-stock open sight strictly 'original gun. It shoots just fine and is fun to share with grandkids and others who come over now and then to do some target shooting off my back deck. Cost was $160.00 for a lightly used gun.

The other is an International model with a Laminated Stock and an added 3x9x40mm Scope with an optional 25 round magazine showing in the photo. It was $210.00 New in Box plus $60 for the scope and mounting rail. The long Mag came in the box with the gun.

Great Rifle

The stock 10/22 is a great choice. Still have the one I purchased in 77'. I recently purchased the 10/22 TD USA model. Love it.

I got the 10/22 All-Weather and couldn't be happier! I got it at Dicks for $239 on sale and that was a great buy IMHO. I've tricked it out and I even call it "Sweetheart" because it's so much fun! Mama get's jealous but hey, The 10-22 does what I want! ; ) She enjoys it and is a pretty good shot.

I am with the others who say to get the standard birch stock carbine. You will not be disappointed. The price is right, the quality is there, and it will give you years of trouble free enjoyment. Most 10/22's will eat any ammo you put in them.

Get either some extra Ruger 10 round mags, or a couple of BX-25's and a brick of ammo. You will be very, very satisfied.

Get the basic model to start because you may not know exactly what you want yet. Later on you can start modifying it like most of us on this site usually end up doing. You will have lots of fun along the way.

Ditto, I have several 10/22's and if I could only keep one I would keep the plain Jane.

Cheapest one...

Used if available in decent condition for less...

There is nothing you can't do to it later...including removing the barrel band...cutting down the stock...and shortening the barrel...no reason to pay more for a shorter barreled compact or an upgraded stock/barrel imo...

I bought the sporter deluxe originally...and love that stock...but it was a waste of money in the end I went to an aftermarket thumb hole stock anyway...
