Looks like a good plan! The auto bolt release you can make yourself from your factory one and 5 minutes w/ a Dremel. Extremely easy, just enlarge and oblong a hole.
The Gunsmither Bolt Bar Tool...cheap yes, but not difficult at all to do w/o the tool.
The VQ mag release is a nice addition and my favorite of all the different styles.
Hope you enjoy your build and that both you and your father can have shared enjoyment from it and thus create long lasting memories.

I have a KIDD Bolt Hold Open (Auto-bolt release) that is BNIB that I will donate to this build
Not a huge savings, but it is for a good cause
Just let me know where to send it...and it will be in the mail asap!
I have the same one on my 10/22 build, great quality product.

Your list looks good. You will definitely get less than 0.50" groups at 50 yards with this. You should purchase some acraglas and glass the stock for a tight fit. You can purchase the stuff over at Brownells. Quote:

- Weever Quad Lock scope rings
That's got me right at $448.50
So i thought about these. Power Custom Titanium extractor
Power Custom Auto Bolt Release
VQ Extended Mag Release
Rimfire Technologies Charging Handle
Gunsmither Bolt Bar Tool
This is $89.50
Total $537.95
Shipping: 22.75 Grand Total $560.70
I can live with that. Considering I was going to build another AR for myself, I'll be spending less for better reasons. It's going to be awesome to build up something different.
Anything in my list I should consider changing or avoiding? | |

You might consider a tapered sporter in 20" (in which case you would need to change your stock to a standard barrel channel) or drop down to a 16.5 or 18" bull barrel to save on the extra fore end weight. I had an 18" Stainless bull barrel on my 10/22 and sold it recently because it didn't balance the way I wanted it to. It was pretty front heavy.
Just my 2 cents. Otherwise, it looks like a good build. Enjoy! |

heymatthew makes a point that I'd overlooked. Not so much for the weight aspect as I don't feel 20" creates a build thats too heavy (and I'm small statured). Rather typically the 22lr reaches max performance in 18" barrels. Ammo choice effects it of course and unless you're going for the very upper limit, you won't discern the difference.

I'm all about keeping balance. So 18 or 16.5...I've seen some of these look kinda short for my taste so I'll probably adjust to 18. Thanks for the tip.

He moved out (at 15, to his mother's) and wouldn't talk to me or even look in my direction when we were at the same place. That went on for 9 years! Finally, he decided to discuss the problem. 9 years and he was still hung up on that. I'd almost forgotten what started it. So, we talked and I told him the same thing I told him 9 years before. Only this time, he was older and actually listened to what I had told him. Things weren't great over night, but after 2 or 3 more years, things began to get a lot better and I could tell he wasn't still holding on to that old grudge. Now, we've got a great relationship and he's gone out of his way to make sure we stay in touch and see each other now and then.
Last Memorial Day I saw him and gave him my LC9. I had told him I didn't really like it and was thinking about selling it. But when we had seen each other a few months before, I was tinkering away trying out some mods. He knows almost nothing about guns, but was really excited about working on that gun with me. He knows that my collection is willed to my kids, and asked if he could have the LC9 rather than me selling it. Why, I thought, that one??? All my other guns are nicer and more expensive. He said it was because we had worked on it together. Wow! I'd never thought of that. But that meant a lot to me and apparently to him to.
Life's too short to not love and appreciate your family.
Hope things work out in yours. | I appreciate the concern and kind words. I apologize to the OP for hi-jacking his original thread. My relationship with my father is weird. We get along fine ...we are just not close. He lives 5 min away. We probably talk on the phone once a week and see each other 2-3 times a month. My family never was close ...I am an only child. My father worked at the local factory and my mother stayed at home with me. I knew I was loved ...but can't remember being told. (not meaning to be a wuss ) As a typical teenager we had our share of disagreements and screaming matches ...but none of that carries into our current relationship. My father and I just have nothing in common. He is a Southern Baptist Deacon. I am a Pagan / hedonist / polygamist. He doesn't even judge me on my lifestyle choice. He is a great guy ...we just share no interests. When we are together it isn't even 'strained'.
OK ...I'm through whining and hi-jacking MasterK's thread. . |

Can anyone recommend any specific tutorial videos, or will a YouTube search give me all I need?

Pretty straight forward so videos aren't really needed. 3 bolts and a couple cross pins and it's all apart.
