| more stuff to shoot at
We have a private range at our cabin. We have become very creative with things to shoot at for fun. We have spinners and gongs. we also like to shoot at the 16.9oz water and soda bottles. We save some up (when we are not recycling them) fill them with water and food coloring. when we get to the range we drop a generic alka seltzer in each bottle and replace the lids quickly. the added pressure give them a nice pop when hit.
For our day at the range finale we pick up some old stuffed animals at yard sales and put the small .22 cal binary targets inside. What a hoot. those little disks really pack a punch.

A good friend and I used to sit at my picnic table and shoot at bees as they worked the clover blossoms in my yard. that was a lot of fun.

Jack,
Winter months at Havasu would be fine... Lots of "Snowbirds" for hunting !! We lived on the High Desert for years in San Berdoo county, and each year the "No Shooting Zone" moved farther and farther out into the unpopulated desert area. We moved out in 2000.

Grab 4-5 bags of Oreo cookies. Set up 5 at 50yd. If you miss it ...you eat it. First one to puke (or go into a diabetic coma) loses.
If you are on a budget get 20 rolls of Necco wafers. .

Paper Targets
Tennis Balls
Clay Pigeons
Shotgun Shells
Dandelions
Empty Ammo Boxes
Old Fruit
We can only shoot metal at 200 yards at our range.

My two favorites are empty gallon water jugs re-filled with water and old bricks. Even 22lr rounds make for some pretty cool results hitting them.

I use spinners and clay pigeons for moderate range shooting. I have a steel plate and wood block hanging from chains further out. And I've also used plumbing expansion tanks as gongs for long range shooting.
Like others have said, reactive targets are the most fun IMO. The spinners always put a smile on my face when they twirl around. And the sound of a bullet ringing on the steel plate, with the added swinging movement, is my favorite to shoot.
I've experimented shooting at lots of different things and what I look for now are targets that give an audible or visual response (or both) when hit, don't need to be reset after a hit and take multiple rounds without deteriorating much.
Of course, I enjoy a bottle of water with Alka Seltzer as much as the next guy...golf balls are good too.
