Bolt replacement

I have a 1996 Walmart Special Ruger 10/22 carbine in stainless that I would like to replace the bolt. It has discolored from early neglect. I would like to get one that has already been modified with a new extractor and firing pin for more reliability. Any ideas where to purchase one without breaking the bank?

Ruger sells the bolt - you can get it through Midway (Bolt Assembly Complete Standard Finish 10/22) for $30.49 with the extractor installed.

The Ruger bolts can be tweaked at modest cost, and excellent results. You would do well to consider having the barrel tweaked at the same time.

There are several gunsmiths who specialize in tweaking barrels, bolts and trigger groups. They can take an ugly bolt, and in addition to making it pretty, adjust headspace, put a pin over the extractor to prevent erratic ignition, and bevel the rear to improve functioning with standard velocity ammunition (much more accurate than high speed).

Rimfire Central has a lot of discussions on these things:

The gunsmith that has worked on all of my 10/22 rifles goes by the name 'Nemohunter' there, but he is reportedly quite ill and has not posted or taken work in quite awhile. There are others:

Note that if you have the rear of your barrel faced off .200" and rechambered with tighter reamer that allows the bullet to lightly engrave, you will have difficulty extracting unfired cartridges without a cleaning rod.

The improvement in accuracy is nothing short of miraculous.

Thumbs up

Try this guy, he takes the factory bolt and tweeks it so that you won't have to do it. I have one and I am very pleased with it, but the prices have gone up since I have ordered mine.

Yea, that's more than I wanted to spend. I have ordered a Volquartsen Extractor, and since I have to remove the bolt anyway I might try to polish the bolt where it rubs against the receiver. The discoloring is on the chamber side, and does not hurt anything, it just looks bad. I might try using a rotor tool and some rubbing compound and see if that does anything. Any other tips to get the bolt to run as smooth as possible?

Yes. Radius the bolt (round the lower back of the bolt if you have the tools or send it to somesone to slick up). I had Que do mine but several people do the work for around $50 (some will even include jeweling the bolt for that price and do a lot of other things also).

I might sent it in later, but for now I might just polish the rear of the bolt as well. I'm trying to get it to slide as smoothly as possible, and to fix the ejection and extracting problems.
