What thread size is our take-down screw

This is a discussion on What thread size is our take-down screw within the Ruger 10/22 Rimfire forums, part of the Rifle & Shotgun Forum category; I saw this on ebay; http://www.ebay.com/itm/Custom-Ruger...71649592009378 and thought it was cool but $35 for a screw? I know its stainless and apparently an odd size ...

What thread size is our take-down screw

I saw this on ebay; http://www.ebay.com/itm/Custom-Ruger...71649592009378 and thought it was cool but $35 for a screw? I know its stainless and apparently an odd size because I took my take down screw to Lowes today to see if I could duplicate it on the cheap and found the thread size is different then any standard screw. I dont really care if its stainless or if the knob is a knurled one, but a screw I can undo with my fingers would be nice because I take my gun apart constantly.

Why does one need to "take their gun apart constantly"??? Unless you're using REALLY dirty ammo (Winchester, for example) there's no need.

Does the new screw stick beyond the bottom of the stock? Seems like it would get in the way more than the help it provides.

The screw is 12x24x1". It is called a 'captive' screw and McMaster-Carr sells them.

Never mind. Just checked and they don't carry 12x24. But they do sell 1/420, 4 for $12. Just an FYI.

Not only is that screw unbelievably high priced, the shipping cost is $7.50, you can get 1500 45 cal. bullets shipped for $15.00.

Wait...so the take down screw...that is 12x24? What's 1/4x20? Now you got me confused.

The 1/4x20 was just for a price comparison.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah it seems as though the gun industry purposely uses odd ball sizes so you HAVE to buy expensive stuff specifically from gun dealers. I know I wanted a 1/2x28 tap for a compensator Im making and everyone was like "1/2x28???, what in the world are you using a size that large with such small threads for??", so I have to order that from a gun retail shop for twice as much as a "regular" tap goes for locally. I guess it's "smart" on their part, it just sucks for us.
