I will be getting my first ever firearm next week. I am going with the base model 10/22-RB. I know that there are cheaper .22 in the market but from everything I have read Ruger 10/22 really is the standard. My main question is what ammo would be best to start out with? I want something that won't dirty the barrel up quickly and is still cheap enough that I can get a lot of shooting in.
All 22 lr will dirty the barrel and action, that is the nature of this round, that said get a Ruger 10-22,$250 combo and under,Used for $150 and up,You will be glad you got one to brag about, good luck
I like blazers. They are cheap and accurate. They do have a wax coating on them but don't be fooled I just cleaned my 10/22 last night and i had shot around 600 round thru it and it was hardly dirty. Enjoy your first firearm.
hello tubst, i have shot federal, winchester, remington, blazer, american eagle, and CCI an of all of them i prefer CCI mini mag they good wether plinking or hunting which is what i primarily use them for
I generally avoid the Winchester, Remington and Blaser - just seem too dirty , especially the Winchester. the others seem to have an extra amount of wax that can build up if not cleaned - to some that IS an issue. What I have found that works well across the board, shoot well and clean is the Federal bulk stuff. Some here get the better ammo but for general plinking, just the gray boxed Federal.
As others have said, all .22lr shoots dirty. If I'm just practicing, I'll shoot Federal copper plated 550rd bulk packs purchased at Walmart.
If I'm trying for the best accuracy possible, I'll shoot CCI Mini-Mag, copper plated, round nose.
The one .22lr ammo I would avoid like the plague is Remington .22lr Thunderbolt LRN. That ammo leaded my MKIII's barrel so fast that it became a smooth bore. Cleaning the barrel was not fun.
I have had my 10/22 for quite sometime and have tried lots of different ammo. The best I have found for mine is the Remington rimfire hollow pts. also called the Golden Bullet. They also can be found at wal-mart fairly cheap in a 550 bonus pack. I would recommend staying away from the Thunderbolts or plain lead bullets.
I've run a couple thousand Blazers through my 10/22 and 22A with only a couple misfires. Not as easy to find as the Wallyworld stuff but much better quality at a comparable price. I bought a case of it last summer from Dunn's Sporting Goods online for $159 shipped.
The joy of owning really any .22 is getting to find the right ammo that works for You. I have used dozens of different brands. A lot work, some dont. For instance, someone said they liked Remington Golden Bullets, but my magazines dont like them ( BX25's), therefore i dont use them. They fire fine, just FTL constantly. Probably the magazine, but there is enough ammo out there that does work so i can always find another i like. Find whats best for You and your gun. Also a common consensus is that Federal Bulk is a good buy. I agree. Never had any problems with it. And about having to clean the gun. Great. Ive gone shooting just so i had to clean mine. You learn something about your gun everytime you take it apart. Good luck and happy shooting.
When ammo was in such short supply......I would buy any brand that was available. None were very expensive and I shot them all. Enjoyed them all. Since the cost was so low I really did not keep note of ftf. They were not real common in any brand as I remember.
Buy what you can afford and shoot a bunch. You will enjoy your new 10/22.
I was shooting today and chrono'd some 22LR's just for fun out of my 10/22. First was CCI HP which were advertised at 1280 FPS. They shot right around 1280 and had consistent velocities. Next was Federal bulk advertised at 1280 FPS. They shot about 100 FPS slower and were not as consistent.
In the future I'll bring the bulk for the wife and kids but I'm only bringing CCI when it's just me shooting.
How was the accuracy of the two? The 100 fps would only make about 1/8" drop at 50 yards. I guess if you are shooin' longer it might make a bigger differance or if you had high cross winds.
For me makin' a tin can go plink isn't worth the extra money. The times I want tight shots I will use the Mini-Mags though. I guess it makes a differance as to what I feel like doing on any shooting day.
Bulk ammo seams to work just fine, Remington or Winchester. Just can't beat $15-$17 for a box of 525 rounds. The CCI 100 rounds bricks are $7-$9, quite a bid more expensive than the bulk ammo. Maybe a little dirty but just as accurate in my 10/22 and MKII in my opinion.
anybody know of any .22 LR rounds that maybe are more deadly than others? Something that you would use for bigger game than gophers? I have always just used holopoints, but maybe that's as good as it gets?
From what little I know but from what I have read when it comes to .22LR there really isn't much you could do. I would say a high velocity hallow point would be the most you could do.
i have to agree with rimfireaddict, i bought 1100 rounds of the Remington Golden Bullets (couldnt pass up the deal) and the seem to FTL at least 2 per magazine. i am also using the BX25 mag. once these are gone i will be switching to another brand.
Federal Automatch. Very few problems. Shot a 22 Rimfire Challenge match this past weekend and had no malfunctions of any kind (10/22 and Ruger MK II pistol).
Like others have said, all .22 LR ammo is relatively dirty. I take the the attitude it's OK to clean the rifle after every brick fired through it. Having said that, I own three 10/22's and I'll load them as follows:
My everyday 10/22 used for plinking and defense of my bird feeders from tree rats and varmint control, I'll use ANY bulk ammo that I can buy CHEAP for plinking and, both types of CCI Subsonic ammo for varmint control. I'll also load any "upper grade" .22 LR ammo that cycles in this rifle if I get the notion to- which will include CCI Stinger and Velocitor to name a couple.
For change, I'll use Aguila Subsonic ammo 60 gr in my 10/22 with the barrel that has a 1:9 twist which is also used for varmint control and limited target shooting.
For serious punching holes in paper beyond 25 yards, I use Wolf, CCI Velocitor and Green Tag, and some subsonic ammo in my custom 10/22. I don't send high/ hyper velocity ammo down range in this rifle because of the barrel and manufacturer's recommendation out of my custom rifle, and it's simply not necessary.
For the most part, I tend to buy and shoot a variety of ammo out of my 10/22's that CYCLE well and is accurate for what I'm shooting. I'm also like a lot of 10/22 owners, I have other .22 rifles and hand guns, so if the ammo doesn't work in my 10/22's. It'll work in one of the other .22 rimfires.
I have been doing great with the bulk Federal ammo and for the price I love it. Here in a bit when I get a scope mounted I will start using CCI for my longer range shooting. But if I just want to go have some fun and shot some rounds off Federal is the way to go for me!
My LGS has the fed bulk packs for $16. I still tend to buy CCI products though. The blazer quality control just seems better. Shinier brass, Bullets seated firmly on cases etc.......
