I have a 1022 and have invested about $1800.00 into the gun. I have used all types of ammo and generally I use the federal gold medal sub-sonic. I had the end of the barrel threaded so that I can unscrew the iron site and screw on one of my .22 suppressors. I bought 5000 rounds of this ammo several years ago and still have amount 3000 rounds left. What I have found while shooting with a vice at about 70 yards through a high end scope is that the ammo is fairly precise. One problem that I have experienced is that on occasion the projectile goes supersonic thus defeating the suppressed noise. It also affects the accuracy. I live in Florida and the stated velocity for this ammo is 1080 ft/sec. The air temperature, as long as it is above about 30 degrees F should keep the projectile subsonic. However, as I stated earlier, this is not always the case.
I installed a volquartsen trigger and speed slide and definitely reccomended the trigger. Unfortunately the trigger costs more that the gun. CCI Green tag is a very good ammo. As I read another post, and I definately agree, each ammo is going to give a different outcome. The idea is to get the ammo which is consistent.
I also add that I have fired about 3000 rounds of sub-sonic ammo through either my AAC pilot or AAC Aviator suppressors and they still work as well today as they did when I got them(years ago). I let them soak (totally immersed) in Kroil for sometimes months. The Kroil changes color and a lot of crap comes out of the cans.
Good luck!

I was happy with that!

I've fed my 10/22 nothing but cheap stuff since I bought it, 5 years ago. Rem Golden Bullet was always fine for me, you get some duds, a little dirty, but always cycled fine for me. Federal is not bad but overall, same catagory for me as Rem, cleaner, but during the colder months, I have problems ejecting, I really had problems with mostly that red box stuff, shot 2 boxes of the Blue and its been perfect during the summer. Overall I liked Win 555 the best, clean, cycles fine. Only tried Blazers once, in general, I try to stay away from the straight lead stuff. I had Rem Thunderbolts before and they worked fine in the pistol and 10/22 but....dont let them heat up when storing, the lube will melt on and thats when you get extreme leading, if you can find them cheap, nothing wrong with them, just dont store them in the car

Federal bulk pack for me, for the cheapo stuff for plinking when everyone else is burning up my ammo on my guns, and when a fail to fire doesn't matter.
When it does matter, and want the most out of mine, all of mine love this stuff... https://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/AMM-060
very accurate, and middle of the road on pricing.
Also smells good.. like the old USGI Lake City 30Carbine ammo.
Been through thousands of rounds at events... always has gone BANG, unlike all the other cheap bulk box stuff.
For me, bulk boxed stuff doesn't get much below 20bux + tax around here.
So +2cents around more for increased accuracy and reliability is a small price.
Most 10/22's seems just not to care for general plinking what you put in them.
Rare, but some have had problems with their 10/22 being picky on ammo.
Seems keeping your rifle clean and properly lubed and changing out the extractor has helped too..
The stock extractor is a very cheap, stamped simple piece of possibly rounded edge, sloppy item.
The aftermarket ones, are harder material, and quality / accurately made, exacting edges. Volquartsen Exact Edge Extractor Ruger 10/22 10/22 Mag Mark II Mark
if you find you have some failures to eject, stove pipping, but the action and chamber are clean and action is properly lubed, the extractor is a 5 min job anyone can do/replace.
It's not common, but others have had the ammo sensitivity, solved it with either cleaning and or the extractor change out.
At events... over the last few years, where the 10/22 are sOOOO popular... if not a cleaning, then changing out the extractor.
Seems more so on the newer 10/22's, but on the old ones, the extractor can wear out as well.

If you wanted to buy 22lr in bulk online, who would you order from? My gun really loves Remington Vipers, but around here I can only get the 100 round packs, and it's more expensive this way. That's only about 15 minutes of shooting. A long time ago I was able to buy a brick of 500 at a local K-Mart, but I cannot find them locally anymore.

I want something that won't dirty the barrel up quickly and is still cheap enough that I can get a lot of shooting in. | As much as I resent this store, my local WalMart has Federal 550 Value Pack (550 rounds per box) for under $20.00.

I've used Federal, Winchester, CCI Mini Mags, Federal Hiawatha Ace (don't make it anymore), CCI stingers, and CCI shot shells. (those are fun :P)
CCI stingers are really fun rounds to shoot and have always worked in my 10/22. They give the .22 quite a bit more kick and "pop" if you will. They are also around $6 for 50 rounds.
CCI mini mags are probably one of the most reliable .22 rounds you can buy. I haven't had any feeding issues with them.
My 10/22 eats just about everything I have fed it.
Between the Winchester and Federal bulk from Wally World, I think I prefer the Winchester myself. I shot 539 rounds out of the 555 that comes in the box and had maybe 6 jams tops...
The Federal seems to jam a bit more in my 10/22, but it's still perfectly useable. The Federal I've been using is in the red box. The Winchester (I've only used one box of that so far) is in a white box. My 10/22 is completely stock.
I don't really know which is cleaner (Federal vs Winchester), I shoot so many rounds when I'm at the range it doesn't really make that much of a difference.
For my 10/22, I think I'm going to start using the Winchester bulk stuff now.
Here's what I suggest doing: Buy a box of federal or winchester bulk and a case of mini mags ($6 for 100 rounds at walmart). That's my normal range procedure. I normally don't shoot the mini mags, I just bring them in case my gun starts to malfunction. Then I can diagnose if it's the ammo or something wrong with the gun. (since I know mini mags work every time)
As far as the barrel getting dirty...not really that big of a deal. I put a 1000 rounds through mine and a couple of passes with a boresnake soaked in hoppes 9 left it spotless. (I have the SS barrel though, that could make a small difference)
The inside of the receiver gets a lot dirtier than the barrel does. In my experience, you'll need to clean the internals more than the barrel.
If you are looking to just plink and aren't very concerned with accuracy, Winchester or Federal bulk will work great. I would buy a case of mini mags though, just in case your 10/22 doesn't like the bulk stuff.
Have fun!

| ? on type of ammo
Just got back from the range.
Fired CCI Blazers 40Gr to sight in the rifle. The shells came out clean.
Then changed over to Remington ThunderBolts 40Gr.
The shells came out dirty and with a black powder residue.
AND at 50 Yards hit the target between 1" to 2" below the
the 1/2" circle I was aiming at.
Went back to the blazers and was hitting the circle.
I will not be using Remington anymore at this time.

Anyone know what is going on with Federal Bulk packs? I used to get them at Walmart anytime, and for $16.99 for the 550 pack. For the last few weeks none of the Walmart stores had any in stock. Even online markets are either out, or have limited stock. The local Cabela's did have them today in the 525 packs, but for $22.00, but I bought three boxes anyway. At the rate I have been going through them I'll need more by the end of next month. If you could not get Federals anymore, what other bulk pack would you buy? Even the CCI Blazers are getting scarce.

I just found come Blazers for $20.00 a box of 525 at Bass Pro. I've never used them before and the first time I've used non plated rounds in my 10/22.

The one .22lr ammo I would avoid like the plague is Remington .22lr Thunderbolt LRN. That ammo leaded my MKIII's barrel so fast that it became a smooth bore. Cleaning the barrel was not fun. | Federal Blue Box 525 is my fav for all my 22 firearms. Pretty clean, pretty accurate, and very very reliable.
