Butler Creek Hot LipsThis is a discussion on Butler Creek Hot Lips within the Ruger 10/22 Rimfire forums, part of the Rifle & Shotgun Forum category; Newbie Here,
I picked up "hot lips" 25 rd. magazine at Academy.
Should this mag be stored unloaded, or o.k. to store loaded ?
Thanks ... |

There is no problem storing any magazine loaded.
Any issue with this would only indicate the need for a new spring.
Springs do not wear out while in a static position, they only wear out when being exercised.

Thanks dV8r I was unsure of constant stress on plastic lips.
Just had a pack of 5-6 dogs come through this A.M. ,jumped on neighbors dogs.
As stick and hollering worked this time, maybe not next time.

With regard to dogs, remember the 3 S's ; shoot, shovel, shutup.

Springs do not wear out while in a static position, they only wear out when being exercised. | The spring argument has been hashed out here before, but let me put it in simple terms. There is no such thing as a perfect static position. Temperature varies, pressure varies, even gravity varies. Those variances affect the actual pressure load upon the spring, so the load isn't really static even if it doesn't move, the loading changes. There is also no such thing as a perfect alloy, there is always some slight degree of imperfection or variance in the amalgam. Thus, all springs degrade, even in a static position. The more load induced, the quicker the degradation. Better alloys, and fairly constant storage procedures (in the trunk of your car isn't as good as the bedstand) can minimize this greatly, almost to being imperceptible, but it still happens.

I bought 4 Ruger BX-25 magazines and had feed problems. I called Ruger and they sent me replacments without seeing my defective mags, and also threw in 6 10 round mags.
I will only buy Ruger mags from now on, they feed flawlessly and the original price was as good as any 25 round magazine and the new ones are so good I gave my butler creek to my son. The butler creek are good but Ruger mags look and function better on my 10/22..
