What's the best after-market rear peep?

I need to sort out the rear sight of my new 10/22 Carbine because it is shameful how bad my groupings are. Someone mentioned that the thing that might help that out is a peep sight. First, what is a peep sight*? Second, is there a "best" 10/22 3rd party iron sight you might recommend?

* I have lived in DC for 25 years and Hawaii before that -- no gun-love at all.

Question: is there a peep that works with the built-in sight? Not SKS or other front "protected" mil-spec-type carbine vibe?

I ordered a scope so maybe I will just stick with optics and leave the iron sights for my trust Scott Volquartsen-pimped MKIII 678 Target, a gun I shoot pretty well with at 50 and 100 feet.

Thanks all!

Make sure the allen screws securing the barrel to the reciever are tight.I have never seen a 10-22 that wouldnt group respectably."peep",or aperture sights work by the rear being a simple circular opening in which your eye will naturally center the front bead on the target.I have always loved them, and more so now that my eyes have gotten older.I use them on all my rifles that dont wear scopes.Be safe.
