Standard barrel in .920" bull barrel stock?

Hi all,

Just wondering if a standard barreled Ruger 10/22 will fit in a stock made for a bull barrel?

I recently purchased a 10/22 and plan to slowly put together a nice target rifle.
I'm interested in the Hogue Overmolded .920" stock. I dont have the funds right now to purchase a bull barrel. and they're very difficult to find here in Canada at the moment. So for the meanwhile i wanted to put my standard barreled 10/22 in the .920" stock until i can get my target bull barrel. Will this work out? Ive read on another forum that this may actually be good cause it completely free floats the standard barrel?

Any info or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Yup and you won't have to worry about free floating it.

sorry to hi-jack, but i'm wondering the same thing

TMD-would the recoil bounce it around, or is it exactly the same as using a free floating stock (like the ss evolution)?

It would be exactly the same as free floating but with a rather large unsightly gap between the barrel and the stock.

How large of a gap? big enough it will look completely ridiculous? or is this somewhat common to do?

Just trying to get rid of this synthetic stock that came with the 10/22. it feels to plastic and toyish. Yet i dont want to have to replace the stock again when i get the bull barrel.

Most of the custom laminate wood stocks on the market are made to fit .900 to .920 bull barrels. If you get a .920 bull you will usually not have to bed the barrel and you'll not notice much of any gap. If you get the small .900 bull, there will be a more noticeable gap, usually 2-3mm, and might want to bed the barrel.

Ascii I think your numbers are a little bit off. If a .900 barrel is put in to place instead of a .920 barrel, the resulting gap would be .010 inches.....about 1/3 of a mm. Now, to estimate the gap for a standard barrel, we take the .92 and subtract the .64 or so (I measured my barrel where it exits a tapco fore-end) to get the .28 difference. Now we halve that difference, since the gap would be above/below or left/right of center. That means .14 inch gap, right around an 1/8 inch in reality. Now THAT is a gap of 3-4 mm!!
