10-22 Cycling & Reset issues

I have a 10-22 that has worked flawlessly for years with 10s of thousands of rounds through it. Recently I have been having a problem with the trigger/hammer/sear/and or firing pin not resetting occasionally. The action cycles perfectly and ejects and loads the rounds perfectly. It will fire 2 or 3 rounds great and the cation will cycle but the the hammer or sear won't reset and won't fire. Also, occasionally it will double fire. I just thoroughly cleaned the action and am still having the same problem. All the parts in the action are factory rugged parts. However, several parts have been fine tuned years ago by a gunsmith for a lighter trigger pull. Like I said, it has worked flawlessly for years and thousands of rounds of ammo: Fed,Remmington,CCI,Winchester, and some high grade target ammo. Up until several months ago. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear you're having a problem with your 10/22. I'm wondering if your trigger group is dirty inside. I've never dis-assembled mine, but there are many YouTube videos on it. Also, do you have, or have access to, another 10/22? If so, perhaps you could just swap out your trigger group for another and see if that helps.

I may try a different trigger group tomorrow when I go at it again.

Hope that works. If all else fails, Ruger will fix or replace it for free. Keep us posted.

Or just upgrade to a BX trigger.

YooperKid, Guns are mechanical devices and as such .... they will eventually wear out. My bet .... the gunsmith that did your trigger job removed too much metal from the sear assembly. A nice trigger pull for a log time but it has now worn out. You will need a new sear and hammer at a minimum ... or you can replace the whole trigger group with a new BX Trigger .... here's a link: NEW Ruger 90462 BX-Trigger 2.75lb Fits All 10/22 Rifles | eBay

I have a new 10/22 that will not reset once in a while as well. I attribute to an under powered cartridge now and then. I've have been using Winchester X cheapies, and also, Rem Golden, which are well known cheapies too. When I use CCI Minis, it's not an issue. Maybe someone can add to this theory or refute it with the mechanics of the rifle. Maybe the OPs issue is more likely caused by work done on the action.

valvestem, You will find your recoil spring will get a bit weaker as more rounds are fired. After a brick or so, likely your 10/22 will cycle just fine with less powerful loads. You are right .... a weak load will not produce enough bolt thrust to force the bolt back far enough to cock the hammer and we all know .... bulk grade ammo is notorious for weak loads. In the OP's case, no doubt his recoil spring is much weaker than when new so I doubt if bolt trust is the problem .... but a simple test with CCI Mini-Mags would confirm it.

Some of you guys missed the part where the trigger was "worked" by a gunsmith. Looks like the trigger sears wore down and you need at a minimum a new trigger group (hammer and trigger sear)

Problem solved!!! I conducted many tests today with my trigger components and trigger components from a different 10-22. Long story short the Hammer and Sear are not the problem. Somehow my 10-22 had a lighter sear spring installed in it than usual. When I placed the beefier sear spring out of the other 10-22 into mine. NO problems. Just ordered a replacement sear spring from Ruger. Thank you all for your suggestions and help.

YooperKid, If your 10/22 "worked flawlessly for years with 10s of thousands of rounds through it" and you are now having problems, don't you think it was caused by wear? I do. A new spring may fix it for now but you will likely end up with a new sear and hammer. BTW, I've never seen a trigger spring wear out.

That very well may be true. The spring will fix things for now. However, I plan on making some more changes to the 10-22 in the near future. Some competition Volquartsen parts, new trigger/hammer job. New optics and such. That should permanently take care of the issue.

Good to hear you found a fix, albeit maybe a temporary one.
