Last shell hanging up

Old shooter and reloader, new to this forum.

Was shooting the 10/22 standard model this morning. I was loading 5 shells into the magazine that comes with the rifle. Almost every time the last shell would not feed into the chamber properly. It seemed to be hanging on the steel lips of the magazine. I cleaned the rifle, (didn't clean the mag) a couple of days ago, this was the first time it has been fired after cleaning. Shot about 300/400 rounds through it.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing a problem like this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Leon

Hmmm, Ole Joe, I'm sure you know the 10-22 magazine which is rotary holds 10 rounds. I'd try it with 10 rounds and see if that cures the problem. Sounds to me that the internal spring in the magazine isn't getting compressed quite enough. You might also try another magazine, there not that expensive.

I second the suggestion to try another magazine. Also, try different ammo in your magazine.

Ole Joe Clark, Most likely it is the magazine's spring tension. Factory magazines are "rotary" meaning they have a rotor that holds 10 rounds with each round in a separate slot. There is a coil spring that provides tension so the rotor will actually rotate and push the cartridge up so the bolt can push the cartridge home. If the spring is too tight, the first few rounds won't strip from the magazine. If spring tension is too loose, it affects the last round or two (like yours).

The solution is fairly simple ... loosen the Allen head screw in the magazine then push the screw head forward until the hex nut on the other end releases from the socket in the plastic body. You can then wind the spring a notch or two tighter by rotating the hex nut clockwise. As long as 10/22s have been in production and as many that have been made, you would think the factory would get the spring tension right .... but sometimes they don't.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try tightening the nut.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Thats what I was thinking.

Ive had old worn mags do that when the spring got weak.
