California laws

Well I never saw this coming. In my quest to own my own rifle, I seem to be in limbo with the DOJ/Prop. 63 background check process.

With absolutely NO criminal, mental health or any other negatively qualifying criteria in my history, the DOJ seems to be unable to make a determination as to my status to own/possess a fire arm.

My ten-day waiting period is now being pushed out to 30 and my early Mother's Day family outing to shoot my new rifle has been cancelled.

While I realize that the laws are established to protect us, in this instance I think that this Christian, card-carrying NRA member, Republican grandma is being tromped on!

So Granny doesn't have her gun after all and she's pretty disheartened.

Just one solution, get the he!! out of California, I know I did over 25years ago, and it is the best thing I ever did. California is now referred to as "Peoples Republic of California", no longer a part of the U.S. as far as I'm concerned. Now let the flaming begin.

Disappointing. I lived in NY up until summer 2014. Then I moved to a free state. There is always time.

Granny you may have the same name that another person has who is a ex-felon. You may have to give up your social security number to the CA. DOJ so that they can do a better background check to show you are eligible for purchasing a firearm.
I had a close friend that was a reserve deputy sheriff and everytime he flew via commercial airline. He got pulled aside for a search and further questions about his identification. It turns out that his good Irish name was the same, first, middle, and last name as was a wanted IRA terrorist.
Hopefully they will clear up the mistake and you can have some fun shooting your new rifle.

Granny,

There is some guy in New York with the same name as I have. Spelled the same for first, middle and last name. Apparently he has some kind of criminal activity in his past and that always causes the FBI to ask my FFL guy for more information. I have been with him for many years and have never been turned down or had to wait for a handgun or long gun. I always get to pick it up the day it arrives at his store, never have to wait. We are fortunate here in Oklahoma to have a good gun environment.

Having said all that, I have not been back to CA since 1977 and do not plan to ever visit there again. I feel the same about Colorado, where I used to go hunt all the time. Life is too short to be in gun-hating states.

I lived in San Bernardino for 6 years .... moved in 1984 before most of the gun rights stuff happened and I'll never go back. I have a daughter that sill lives in CA and have been trying to talk her into moving since she is now single and her only child just graduated from college. She's the only one of our 4 kids that really likes guns. This past Christmas, she spent a week with us here in Iowa. We had a great time at my son's farm shooting some of my handguns. I guess I didn't realize how bad it is in CA, concerning anything to do with a gun or even having a background check to buy ammo. Here in Iowa, you get a permit to purchase or a concealed carry permit, show it to the dealer, fill out a ATF form, pay money, and walk out of the store with the gun and ammo in hand .... all in about 15 minutes.

I'd be all for moving out of state if I could take my beyond-adorable grandchildren with me. Since I don't think that's on the table, I'm going to have to learn how to navigate these new waters.

My gun store has been very helpful in explaining this process, and since I'm certain that my background check will reveal nothing, by the end of this month I should get my Ruger 10/22.

I have been told to expect a letter from the DOJ which should give me some clarity, but as yet, I have not received it. While I don't think my name is all that common, I certainly concede that most likely there is a duplicate name out there. I would be more than happy to furnish additional information, including my SSN, to clearly identify me with my clean record. All they need do is ask.

I'm not getting any younger, so they'd best get to it!!

Granny it is easy for someone to tell us to move out of CA. Like You I and my wife have our two sons about one hour drive away and our 6 grandkids. No way are we going to pull up roots and move away from our family. All 6 of my grandkids are excellent shots and two of them are on their high school trap shooting team.
Living in rural Northern Ca. is not that bad, I have 2-1/2 acres in the foothills and even have a 40 yard pistol range with 12 foot berm at the back of the property. walk out my back door for 50 yards and I am on the shooting range.
Enjoy your gun and make sure those grandkids learn safe gun habits and get to enjoy shooting with their grandma.

It's also easy for people to complain and do nothing. I pulled up roots and reestablished. Worth it.

A card-carrying NRA member, Christian, republican, granny, with a criminal-free background is the epitome of America...but not in California. I'm sure the DOJ thinks they should double check your background. Sorry, for your bad luck.
