Gun Stock finishing question

I cut a cheek relief in my 10-22 stock, and made the pistol grip a little more pronounced.
Since this required the physical removal of wood, I had to get all of the old finish off.
I did this with Jasco and then cleaned the stock with mineral spirits and elbow grease.
I used micro-mesh sand paper and started with 130 grit, and progressively went until 8000 grit. its slick to the touch
Since the stock is made of birch (I thought it was walnut until I put my knife to it), there is some splotching left. I would not like to sand the splotched spots out, because it would require too much wood to take it out.

I'm going to try acetone and elbow grease as soon as my neighbors rooster crows.
I'm not really anticipating this to work very good and I was wondering If any one else has modified their 10-22 stock and found a way to rectify this problem.
