| Rear sight removal??
Guys,
I pulled a bone headed move the other day. I got a new 10/22 in Realtree Camo. I've done some mods to the trigger group and have it shooting really smoothly.
The rear sight was too far to the right to be able to sight it in so I thought I'd 'tap' it to the left. I didn't have any brass punches and knew better, but thought I could move it just a tad. I smacked it a couple of times with a steel punch and deformed the dovetail on the sight, slightly. It didn't move. Now, I've tried removing it (back to the right) but can't get it to budge. I'm using an aluminum piece, and it just deforms the aluminum.
If I can get it out, I can stone down the bulge and re-install it. Is there some trick I'm unaware of, or do I just need to get a set of brass punches?
I had the barrel in a vise, wrapped in leather to hold it.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Winkel

A bit of fine oil , let it sit for a minute or two then a fair but solid tap with a brass punch.

BlackHawk,
Thanks for the oil tip. I hadn't thought of that, but it worked. I got the sight out, got the bulge stoned down and the sight re-installed.
All is good now.
Thanks again,
Winkel

When I replaced the sight on my P90 the Ruger people told me to tap from left to right. I've always done the same on other sight removals. Left to Right and reinstall from right to left.

A solid tap where? From what direction? In the center, front to back? In the center back to front? Looking at the rear sight, I can't see any seams, so I can't tell where the dovetail is for the rear sight.

Give a solid tap just below the folding leaf of the rear sight, where the "ears" of the dovetailed sight base are.

But, unless you've seen the dovetail... it's hard to tell how this was put on.

Does anyone know what is the size of the set screw that locks the base of the rear site on a Ruger 22/45 target pistol? It somewhere near a Metric M3.5 and an ANSI(standard) #6 size thread. I lost mine and I have nothing to measure.
