Brand new rifle - magazine falls out?

Hi all,

Got my first firearm last week - Ruger 10/22 Carbine with stainless barrel and black synthetic stock. I took it to the range today for the first time and after firing about 50 rounds, the magazine started falling completely out of the gun after every 4-5 shots. This video I found on Youtube illustrates what happened:

(I guess I can't post youtube links, but the youtube video ID is /watch?v=5vfHYv1OLBI )

I bought the gun at Dick's just last week. Should I contact them about returning it? Or should I contact Ruger about a warranty claim? I was thinking of just buying another magazine and trying that, but not sure what to do if the issue persists.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Luckily 10/22s are crazy easy to work on. Sure, try another mag. What have you got to lose? You'll end up owning 15 or more 10/22 mags eventually anyways. We all do.

If problem persists with a new mag, the trigger group is simple to remove. Inspect the mag release. Mag release upgrade parts are available too from many sources.

OR... just send it back to Ruger. Their CS is top notch and they'll have your carbine back to you in a couple weeks free of charge.

Saw the video. Check the mag well plunger to see if it moves freely. It may be hanging up and not grabbing the mag.

I would deal directly with Ruger for repairs. All Dick's will do is send it to Ruger anyway. Delays and middleman to mess with. If Dick's is willing to swap you for a replacement rifle, Ok, but they probably wont do that.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think Dick's has a no-return policy on firearms so I'll either have to send it to Ruger, try and fix it myself, or try a local shop. Another question, possibly related: how much is the magazine supposed to wobble when inside the gun? Mine seems pretty loose, which I'm guessing is related to its falling out of the gun entirely. I did a quick movie of it wobbling:

Whoops, still can't post links. URL is youtube.com /watch?v=jltqBldx0YA

Mine are pretty much rock-solid and have no wobble.

Have Dicks ship it back, You shouldn't be on the hook for shipping charges.

Ruger will send a shipping label. He won't pay a dime to send it back if necessary.

Did you disassemble and clean/lube before shooting it for the first time?
This would make sure nothing is left over from the manufacturing process.
Firearms are not shipped with lube, but a preservative.
Clean, inspect, shoot again to see if the problem still exists.

I've never heard of a dealer having a "no return " policy. I buy from local dealers just in case something like this happens. Bring it back to Dick's , part of the service is letting them deal with the manufacturer when a brand new rifle has a problem.
If they do in fact have a no return policy I will not buy from them.
The 10/22 magazine should not be loose and it should not fall out. Something is wrong , wrong from the factory , Dicks should repair or replace the rifle, you should not be on the hook for this.
Just go in , be nice and show them how the magazine fits. It may be the magazine!
Gary
