What would be the application for this smoothbore 22?

Sorry, but I do not know of anyone who makes a smoothbore 10/22 barrel.

Just get a shotgun, .22shot has no power at all.

Wrong. .22 shot works great on big barn rats.

Never heard of a smoothbore bbl being available. Not big on such loads so how would a smoothbore performance differ greatly from a rifled one using the shotshells?

IMO, I'd rely on hitting the target with a well place shot rather than use the "spray-and-pray technique of shotshells.

Awards Showcase

Marlin makes a smooth bore .22 from time to time, usually called a 'Garden Gun"

You could probably get a barrel maker to turn out a custom smoothbore barrel for your 10/22, or to ream the rifling from an existing barrel.

Two things to remember:
1. The .22 shotshell will not have enough back pressure to function the gun as a semi auto. You will have to work the action manually for each shot. You might do better to look for an inexpensive bolt action rifle.

2. Shotguns require a longer than 18" barrel to be legal.

Mossberg made smoothbore .22 bolt guns a long time ago. There may have been other makers but I don't recall. Perhaps a search of the auction websites would turn something up.

It was just a random thought.....: the shot works fine on big rats with the rifled barrel. Cycling each round by hand is a non issue.

Barrels

Rifle barrels need 16"
Shotgun needs 18"
This is the feds requirement, states may differ.

whtsmoke bringing back memories. I remember the Remington 572 smoothbores. I haven't seen one in a long time. I have a rifled Rem 572 that's like new. Nice little rifles.

For the money you'd spend on a smooth bore job, you could buy another barrel and use one for shot and the other when you want to shoot standard ammo.

Just a thought...

The reason I myself would like one for grasshopper wing shooting. Using birdshot and walking through a meadow, fun and super shooting training.
