Barrel length 16 or 20 inch?

I'm looking at picking up a new barrel for my 10/22,and there are 2 choices from the vendor...a 16" or a 20". Would there be any specific advantage to either, or and disadvantages for either one?

It probably depends more on how the rifle will be used.
If the rifle will be shot mainly off the bench, than a longer barrel will be appreciated for the quieter report and the added weight will not be an issue.
If the rifle will be mainly carried in the field then you’ll probably appreciate the lighter fast pointing shorty.
I have a 16” barrel on my 10/22 converted to 17HM2 and I like it. It barks pretty loud but it’s light and fast handling works great on fast and up close jack rabbits.
My son has one with a longer bull barrel and the added weight actually holds a little steadier on the long range offhand shots.
You really only need 16” to realize the full velocity potential of the 22lr, also shorter barrels are slightly more inherently stiffer and be a bit more accurate but truthfully accuracy has a lot more to do with chamber dimensions, rifling, crown and overall quality.
Personally I prefer the shorter lighter barrels but that’s just my two cents and others will probably chime in with opinions shortly..

That's what I'm after more than anything. It's not a "field" gun,it gets alot of target time, and also is used for exterminating turtles from the in-law's pond. Most of the turtle shots are 50-75 yards,so a steadier handling rifle would be better.

I have a vq tension barrel 18-3/8" over all but that includes the compensator so actually its only about 16-1/2" with out it, it feels great, super lights and well balanced, I have shot a lot at about 30 yards and shoots one raged hole, I will let you guys know how it does at 100 yards....once it stops raining.

I have a 1022 standard barrel - I found it to be accurate AFTER I put on a scope. And a lot more fun. Seems like the peeps are fading with old age! MJG

I have two 10/22's One short barrel and one 22 incher from Wally world. The 16 is loud for the range and the 22 incher is great for shooting clays at 100yards. (Their on the ground)
I did some work on the triggers and the bolt release and polished the bolt on both. Never have any trouble with either of them.
