Second Barrel same problem

When cleaning my original barrel I noticed something odd in it. with the cleaning rod and some effort I knocked out what appeared to be a bullet that was mashed against the side of the barrel. The gun shot before and after this but was very inaccurate and the bullets were tumbling. I bought a new barrel and after no more than 50 rounds cleaned it and had the same issue. I pushed out another piece of lead. Just like to one before you could see down the barrel and the gun would shoot. I am at a loss for why this is happening has anyone had this same issue?

Check your magazine, it might be mis aligned, and shaving the bullet as it strip from the magazine? Also who is the barrel manufacture? Other thing to look at did you use a torque wrench when you put on the new barrel?

Am I missing something? What kind of gun is it? Barrel length? Caliber? Bullet type and weight?

I am going with low quality or old ammo.

Ruger 10/22, Both barrels were Ruger stock barrels, Yes to thunderbolts, No to torque wrench, not sure how to make sure magazine is aligned properly.

This is a well known malady when using the Thunderbolt ammo....

These guys nailed it...ammo.

Once that sliver of slug is removed there's no reason to get another barrel. I had it happen with a $350 match barrel years ago.

Another thing that can do it is firing rounds off that've had damage from a feed way jam.

A few months ago I posted a rant about Thunderbolt ammo on another popular site. About half of the folks that commented agreed with me, and the other half wanted to "tar and feather" me....lol. After spending about 2 hours helping a friend who was new to shooting. "A brand new 10/22" After shooting 500 rounds he had about the same problem as you. He tried to use his brass bore brush to clean his barrel and the brush got stuck about half down the barrel and broke the tip off his cleaning rod trying to pull it out. He called me and I tapped the brush out, along with a big strip of lead. I used a light to see down the barrel and couldn't see the rifling for the lead build up. I scrubbed his barrel for 2 hours using my brush, got it clean and shot 100 mini-mags out of his gun. It shot perfectly with no visible lead build up. Thunderbolts work fine in some rifles but I will not use them in my 10/22. Brush the lead out and try some different ammo and see if that works for you, before sending the barrels back.....Bob
