"What's this rifle worth"? kind of depends on what you're in to.

To ME, a Mossberg ATR is worthless.

It is worthless because once the hardware is bought and paid for, it costs just as much to shoot a more upmarket centerfire rifle as it costs to shoot a budget model. It would cost me just as much to shoot 200 rounds through a Mossberg ATR as it would to shoot 200 rounds through my Ruger No.1-B and I would MUCH rather shoot my No.1 than some low-budget, "tacti-cooled" bolt gun with a rattle-can paint job.

Your mileage may vary, and I assume it probably does.

It's worth as much as you want it and how much you are willing to pay for that want.

This is true for most everything, and so I wholeheartedly agree.

With firearms, though, you've got the expense of shooting them that continues long after they're paid for. That's why I don't see much value in a Mossberg ATR or its "budget bolt action brethren" so common in the marketplace today. If it costs me $200.00 for the privilege of running 200 rounds down the tube of an ATR during one range session, and it also costs me the same to run the same amount of ammo down the tube of a No. 1 or some other more "upmarket" rifle, I'd rather spend the $200.00 to shoot a nice, unquestionably high quality rifle. Because every time I take it out to use it, it might cost me a dollar a shot, but I'll have the joy and satisfaction of shooting something that was worth setting a goal for, sacrificing for, and isn't likely to loose much value over time if I use it with care and take care of it.

I paid $275.00 for my No.1 when it was new in 1989. It still presents and functions as new. If I HAD to sell it, I am reasonably certain I would get my original purchase price back and then some. But I don't have to sell it, and I can continue to use it for the rest of my life, and when I am paying what it costs to actually shoot a rifle, I want to spend it on shooting a nice one.

That being the case, I'd rather let things like function, reliability, accuracy, durability, aesthetics, and pride of ownership hold sway in my purchase decision, rather than buy the cheapest rifle I can find that goes "bang" and allows me to hit a target.

In short, I don't see the value in shooting expensive ammo out of a cheap gun that has a low, low price tag as its main selling point.

But I suppose others who are more in to owning a gun than shooting them would see the value in a $350.00 rifle that they're only going to shoot a $20.00 box of ammo through each year.
