.556 will do a lot of damage out to about 1000 yards with the proper ammo, and all kinds are available for them. I have a sig sauer swat, great for a couple of hundreds or less. Everything from green tips, to incendiary to frangible are available. A bullet to kill just about anything up to a bear or large four footed beast.
I'm set up with handguns out to about 50 yards, shotgun up to about 100, and .556 over 100, anything over that? Depends on who or what's coming at me. But I dont expect to be hunting, while I do expect to be defending. | Excellent post. The Op has an AK. Why not an AR for longer range?

Seeing you are in VA, the 270 would be a good choice anywhere in the state for long range hunting. There are some area's restricted to shotgun only, but you have that covered.

My question is what is a good caliber for a long range rifle, a caliber where ammunition is plentiful and i will not have problems getting some, as well as the caliber being powerful which goes without saying. Any specific models or types of rifle reccomendations will not hurt either.
Sidenote- I do not care if the rifle has kick, as i am a avid shotgunner and am comfortable with recoil. The only place i cannot take recoil is my pockets when shopping lol ! |
308 / 7.62 nato is a do it all round.
It can be had to reach out past 500 yds.
It's a nato round, so you will now and again get deals on surplus.
It doesn't seem to be going away.
I love 30-06, but as I understand it, with today's powder the 308 can perform as well as the 30-06.
If you want to get into an all American battle rifle, the M1 Garand can be had for a lot less than an M1A / M14 , via the CMP , and is in 30-06.
And right now, thru the CMP, you can get 30-06 M2 Ball cheaper than 308/7.62 can be had.
The USGI M2 ball 30-06 can be used in ANY Rifle chambered in 30-06 (of course that's in shootable condition.).
The M1 Garand, doesn't kick hard with the 30-06, not like a bolt action does chambered in the same.
Right now the M1 Garands from the CMP are in nearly like new condition, or very low use... they are some of the absolute best the CMP has ever had to offer.
For general SHTF round or just a fun round, either the AK like you have already or .223, but you already have that covered.

Eligibility Requirements for Purchase : Eligibility Requirements
There a little bit of paper work to go thru, but really just 15 mins filling out the paper work, getting it notarized.
Need to join an affiliated club.
Most Join the GCA, and you can join on line, and your email receipt can be mailed in with your order form.
And need something for the marksmanship part of it. A carry permit does it, or shooting an Appleseed Event, or if your on the job (LEO) or in the one of the US Services.
All well spelled out in the page the link above brings you to.
Joining the GCA on line... Home
create an account in the store..
then go to memberships, select "new membership" and so on..
in a few minutes you have your email receipt ... and can submit with the CMP form..
I have a one or two garands from the CMP...
They are VERY addicting, and all History, and all USGI (but for the stocks, some come with commercial stocks, they seemed to be running out of decent USGI stocks, the lower grades like Rack and Field grades have functional but beat up USGI stocks... but even them as of late have been solid shooters).
The Service Grades are one of the best values going right now.

Now lets get realistic shall we! If you have never shot a rifle passed 400 yards before or hunted game that far out, it is no piece of cake just because you stick some high powered rifle scope on top of the barrel.
I would choose either the 7mm Rem. Mag for long range shooting (over 350 to 500 yds) the 7mm is easy on the torso and you won't be sore the next day like a .300 Win mag or .338 Win mag etc.
Rifle wise I am a Winchester model 70 man and often did use a Browning FN rlfle as well. Ruger, Winchester, Savage and CZ all make very accurate bolt action rifles. If your shooting further than 500 yards etc. you better be a very skilled marksman who has had lots of training and good practice because this is what it takes to hit a deer at 800 yards. Not to mention doping the wind, humidity and elevation etc. |

I see no one has mentioned the powerful, flat shooting 7mm mag. One of my favorite rounds for very far shots. The .300 Win mag is basically the same cartridge case with larger diameter heavier bullet and for extremely long shots it'll tend to drop a bit more when it hits the 150 yard line & beyond. The 7mm mag will be more accurate and drop substantially less than the .300 Win mag. I do agree with the general consensus about the popular .308 & 30-06 but I personally prefer to stray away from the pack and use something a little different myself. I have used the 7mm mag to take shots at 500 yards+ and was always impressed with it's performance. Your selection should be based on what you will mainly be using the rifle for. I use the .270 Win for almost all my mid to large game North American hunts but I'm always sure to take along a 7mm mag as well. While I was living in Arizona some 35 years ago I have personally seen a coyote hit with a 7mm mag (not my kill) at a distance of approximately 400+ yards and it was almost severed in half! Since then I have always been fascinated with it's terminal performance, enough so that I now have four different rifles chambered in 7mm mag.

I bought my son a .243 when he was 12. The ammo is relatively inexpensive, the re-coil is relatively low and their is plenty of power to take big game at 300+ yrds. He's taken 5 deer with it.

Savage 110 in .308. While Mosins are cheap, and I've owned several, they aren't much cheaper than a Savage. Also, they can be difficult to scope well, and you can end up buying several before you get one that is accurate enough for precision work. You would definitely need a better trigger, probably want a new stock. Before you know it you've spent way more than a Savage would cost.

Ruger, Remington or CZ in .243, 7mm-08 or .270 winchester. .22-250 if you want .22 and really fast. .308 or 30-06 would fill the bill. Last time I looked all but the .30 cals were on the shelf. .
The .308 and 30-06 are close in velocity; it's when you go to the heavyweight .30 cal bullets the 06 shows an advantage.
