Question for Marlin 60/795 owners

I went to my local gun store unsure about which rifle to buy, Ruger or Marlin. I was torn between the two when I bought my Ruger. In the end, the 10 22 felt much more balanced and comfortable. Also, the gunsmith recommended it really, really highly. I have just begun acquiring 22 rimfires, and I suspect I will also be buying a Marlin soon.

I'm curious. Those here who own both, what do you liked better about your Rugers? What do you like better about your Marlins?

Ruger is great for its simplicity and ruggedness. Plus I have never had any failures with either of mine. My 60 is a great gun, and actually a little more accurate than my stock 10/22 carbine. Its just a longer, more complex gun with a lot less options on customization. Wouldnt get rid of any of them though.

Both are great guns. The Ruger has some things going for it that the Marlin does not. The Ruger has tons of add-ons, options, and excellent performance. The Marlin is accurate, but does not have great add ons. Also, I much rather pull apart the Ruger's action versus the Marlin's. Both are well proven rifles, but the Ruger wins hands down. I gave my Marlin to a friend of mine and he is happy with it... mainly because he has never shot the 10/22 haha

KEPT MY NEW MARLIN 795 S/S FOR TWO WEEKS....A PIECE OF JUNK. HORRENDOUS TRIGGER, POOR FIT AND FINISH,.....THE STOCK "SPRUNG" WHEN I TOOK IT APART TO CLEAN ALL THE FILINGS ETC. OUT OF IT.
DON'T BUY THAT MARLIN..........

Have a Marlin Model 70 and it completely stock form with a Redfield atop it, it's a fantastic shooter, very accurate. Out of the box, it'll shoot better than a comparable 10/22. What makes the 10/22 more appealing to many is the HUGE availability of aftermarket accessories.

Out of the box, the 795 has a better trigger and is a more accurate. Other than that almost all the aftermarket support goes to the 10/22.

Awards Showcase

I bought a Marlin 795 only because it was on sale for $100 + Marlin $25 rebate. For $75, I couldn't have asked for a better rifle. It is extremely accurate and have never had an issue with it. I really want a 10/22 with a bull barrel but for now, I'm really enjoying the cheapest gun in my collection.

Here it is with a cheapo scope and its range companion.

I love my Ruger SR40 & LCP! But there is no comparison IMO the Model 60 is less expensive, inherently more accurate and has a better trigger! Having owned both I feel I can with all honesty recommend the Marlin over the Ruger. I ended up selling the Ruger 10/22 and I'm glad I did, both guns never had any FTF or FTE issues but the Marlin was just a better gun.

I have had a Marlin Model 60 since the mid 70's. Two years ago I put an ATI stock on it. I have an International 10-22, I wouldn't accessorize my 10-22 other than a scope a better mag release and I polished the trigger and put in a buffer for the bolt. My 10-22 is absolutely a beautiful rifle and now it shoots really well but my Marlin is overall just a better rifle, I made some tubes to fast reload the tubular magazine plus I have the old real long barrel. But nothing as far as 22's in the semi auto form can touch the accuracy of the Marlin. That micro groove barrel I wish I could get for a 10-22 might put it into the same class then but not now! I do alot of Prairie Dog hunting which requires you to shoot a little further than normal. Thats where the microgroove barrel stands out, the trigger isnt bad for a factory trigger, the trigger on my 10-22 was absolutely horrible that is why I had to do a trigger job on it. They are both nice 22's but my vote for a plinking hunting 22 goes to the Marlin. I do like the Rugers Magazine ability and have never shot a 795 so I cant say much about it.

+1 on that....but you're talkin' a 1970's Marlin, not a 2011-12 marlin. My 1960's Marlin Golden 39A is a masterpiece..AND accurate. Has a J.W. Fecker 4x 'scope on it. Never been to a 'smith except for mounting the 'scope . The micro groove barrels are still the best ever, it's what's around them now are poorly made and fitted.

+1 on what Kan of Korn said. But I will add out of the box Marlin is more accurate than the 10/22 but the 10/22 (with mods) can be made more accurate than the Marlin. I have owned a Marlin model 60, model 70 (Papoose), and 795 SS. I currently own 3 10/22s. The Rugers can be modified to shoot Rimfire Steel Challenge Matches easier. Although one guy used a Marlin 60 this past weekend but he had to come to the line twice because of having to load the tube twice (20 rounds shot at the firing line). Both are good guns for what they are.

+1 on what Jakeleg said. My first ever rifle was a Marlin 60, made in 1985. It is accurate as all get out (probably due to the micro groove barrel) and would definitely outshoot my 2001-ish SS 10/22 in stock form. The fit/finish is outstanding - nice bluing and the stock fits like a glove.

Last year, I bought a 2007 Marlin 795 SS and that thing was a lemon! Turned out, the barrel left the factory without rifling! Fortunately Marlin/Remington customer service made things right and sent me a new rifle...still not 100% happy with it due to its relatively crappy fit/finish (sights are slightly canted in relation to the receiver) and taking nearly 3 months to get me my replacement. I kept it because strangely enough, it still shot right on the money and as accurately as the 1985 M60. It's just my beater rifle, anyway. But no more new Marlins for me.

With that said, the fit/finish of my brand new 10/22 TD is overall a bit better than my M795. However, it had a problem with canted sights/forearm misalignment as well. I managed to adjust things to get it to line up right...but ugh - QC should have caught this before it left the factory!

My 795

For $100 dollars it makes a nice light rifle to carry. Fit and finish could be better, but for the price it will do. When I first got mine it would not shoot worth a darn, and I could not hit the backside of a barn. It was a jam-o-matic to boot, but after changing ammo and a good cleaning that problem was fixed. The reason mine would not shoot was because my scope rings were loose. I used some loc-tite on the rings, changed to a more powerful scope and now it's a keeper and another good squirrel gun in the safe.

I own a Marlin 60DLX 50th Anniversary model. The checkered walnut stock and nice blue finish really brings out the best in this rifle. I must caution you that many of the Marlins that were first produced after the Remington buy out were not up to the standard of the older Marlins. The guns that were produced in North Haven are the genuine Marlins and there are a few new ones still out there. I always check the used gun racks when looking for a Marlin. I think that Remington has managed to get all its new people better trained to build Marlins so, late issue guns should be OK. Even though I like the Marlin 60 a little better than the Ruger, I would probably buy the 10/22 if I was in the market for a .22 today.
