Greetings,

The Ruger 6.5 Creedmoor was designed as a 1,000 yard target cartridge. The 6.5 x 284 is chambered by Savage, and is also very competitive. The big boomers are heavy, expensive to shoot, and will beat you to death.

don't leave out the 260 Rem., its nearly the same bc as a 300 win mag and it wont beat you to death...but I have both (260 and 300) and both will feel you need for looooonnnnggggg range shooting.

I can't offer up a "best," as I have my preferences, but I can offer up some very capable options. Look into the Savage 11/111 Long Range Hunter, Savage 12/112 BVSS, Savage FCP or F-Class or Benchrest series, etc. Pretty hard to beat for out of the box accuracy at reasonable prices. Especially nice to be able to swap barrels at home as you burn them out if you're doing high-volume long range practice.

Greetings,

Consider the 6.5 Creedmoor or the 6.5 x 284. The Creedmoor with a 120 grain bullet has a drop of eight feet at 1000 yards. Both are easy on the shoulder and powder usage. Bullets and brass are much cheaper than the 338 or 50 caliber.
The 6.5 x 55 Sweed has been used on big game in Europe for over a 100 years, and it is good on deer, stag, boar, bear, and moose. Further, the 6.5 is much better for pelt hunting of coyotes, bobcat, fox, and other critters. A better caliber for all around use...

I read an online article entitled "Long range hunting on a budget" and same website "270 Win for long range shooting". They were both very interesting. The 270 Win. sounds like a very resonable cartridge to work with.

I used to shoot 600 yard matches but never did 1000 yards. It didn't take long to learn ... you want a gun where you can get bullets that have the highest ballistic coefficient possible. For conventional calibers, 6.5 and 7mm have the highest BC. For specialty rifles, 338 or 50 cals are the best. You will need match grade bullets in whatever caliber you choose because hunting bullets are just not perfect enough.

At the range, the three rifles that consistently win matches are the 50 BMG, 338 Lapua and the 6.5X284. 338 Win mags and 300 Win Mags fair pretty well too. One of my shooting buddies has a Win Mod 70 chambered in 7mm Weatherby Mag (26" bull barrel) and has turn in some pretty good scores.

Bottom line ... in order to compete at 1000 yards, you need a really good rifle with a really good barrel, chambered in a really good cartridge, with really good bullets and loads. If you go cheap on any of these, likely you will be sadly disappointed.

I new some guys back in New Mexico that when hunting they would shoot a deer across a canyon that would be 100 yards, but the hike down one side and up the other would be about 3/4 of a mile. Would you call that a 1000 yd. shot?

You could carry the remains in a small ziplock bag if you thumped a deer with a 50 cal. Straight home, fire up the grill and enjoy your days kill, in one bite size serving. Howitzer?

I would go with 6.5 creedmoor, 260 remington, 6.5 swede (on a modern action), or 6.5x47 lapua. The 6.5s perform as well as the 300WM to 1000 yards with a whole lot less recoil and expense.

Incedentally, Savage not only makes a purpose-built 1000 yard rifle, but its also one of the most accurate out-of-the-box rifles you can buy, and you'd still have about $1200 left over for glass and mounts.

Probably have what you want by now, but my 2 cents:

.30 caliber to .375 with .338 Lapua being the consensus long range choice. Given the right choice of bullet (boat-tail, spire point) and powder volume, virtually any good rifle, many well under $1000, will do the job. Savage makes a tactical rifle in .338 Lapua that is selling for $999.00.

But you really have to consider that your optics may cost as much or more than the rifle, if you are serious about 1000 yard shots. Not to mention the cost of feeding your spotter.
