| SIG SAUER 522 vs S&W 15 22?
Hey Ruger folk, I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Sig 522 AR type rifle. I just bought a lightly used one (a laywer owned it) and I think I got a fair deal on it, ($265.00) it looks like it's brand new. I handled it in the shop and it felt like a sturdy built, well made rifle when compared to the S&W M&P 1522 AR. The Smith felt very much like an airgun or a toy gun from my childhood (very lightweight, noisy & loose when shaken lightly) while the SIG felt more robust and solid, the S&W seems to be more attractive to the general population but I have read some complaints about various issues, though mostly minor. The SIG wasn't without it's share of problems either, from the online reviews I've read, but handling them both, I just liked the overall feel of the Sig. Anyhow, I'll be picking it up on Saturday and will immeadiately head up to the club with it to send 250 rounds or so down range and see how it does. If anyone has any thoughts on this little .22, I'd certainly appreciate hearing about them!

My wife is only 4' 10" and she likes to shoot rifles off hand. Problem is there aren't many out there that fit her well. A few years ago when the S&W 15-22 came out she fell in love with it. I guess because of the fact that its polymer so its light weight. I had put a cheap reddot scope on it and bought her 5 mags for it. Needless to say she's put several thousand rounds through it and has never had an issue other then nagging me for not reloading the mags fast enough for here.

I agree, the Smith is less ridgid for sure. The early 15-22s has issues with the ejectors breaking off. I like the way the 522 is put together much better, having that big buffer is a good piece of mind. I also like how it's possible to switch from a 16" carbine barrel to a 20" barrel in a few seconds. I've never ever heard of a 522 cycling complaint, it's a pretty reliable set up.

I need another .22lr about as much as I need a friggin hole in my head! The problem was that this "little number" was calling out to me (maybe just the voices in my head) so I had to adopt her. I've been reading about the e-clips on them breaking but it's supposedly an easy fix. I just need to figure out what optic to put on it. This is only the 3rd gun that I ever purchased used, or as they so glamourously word it "pre owned" with that said, I won't be getting the case or the 20" barrel that it originally came with. |

10/22! 10/22! 10/22! (im chanting that in case you couldnt tell ) imo thats the ONLY mag fed semi auto .22 worth owning.
a good Ruger will still be running strong when the S&W and Sig are already shot to pieces.
*add a semi auto is only as good as the mag that feeds it and those guns are weak in that aspect

I already have two different 10/22's and I love them both but I just wanted to try one of these "AR" type rifle's that the general population is so crazy about! I took it to the range and I can now see why they're so popular! It was very consistent at the 50 yard line with the aftermarket sights it came with but I think it'll be just as good at 100 yds with the 3x9 Redfield I ordered for it. Now I can take it in the woods and go "Rambo" on the squirrels! (lol) I stated in my earlier post that it came with no box but luckily when I picked it up it had the original hard case and all original paperwork and manual. It is not the typical 522 model that comes with the 2 barrels, this one is a 22SCM model with an 18" barrel without the "crown" suppressor. I was offered $350.00 for it on saturday afternoon at the club. I think I'm just going to hold on to it for a while and see what it'll do on the 100yd line with the scope mounted.

| I ordered up a Sig 522
I looked at a lot of .22lr black type rifles; S&W, Ruger, Colt, Mossberg, GSG 2 versions, possibly others. Every time I did I felt or noticed something on those that I liked better about the Sig. It always just felt better in my hands. I watched the nutnfancy Youtube review of the rifle and that sold it for me.
I recently bought a GSG 1911 tactical pistol .22lr, shot it last week for the first time and had a lot of fun with getting used to the way it handled and shot. The mags are $30!! a piece for it, I ordered 2 more and may order 2 additional later on. It shoots great but it might be a bit ammo picky. I was shooting bulk Winchester hollow points, GSG says shoot round points so that may have had something to do with the FTF and FTE that happened from about the mid point of the session to finish. Since then I have bought what I hope is better round nose appropriate ammo for it (Federal auto match grade)
The Sig, I bought 4 25 rnd magazines from Black Dog Machining @ $10!! each + I also bought a loader tool, saves your thumb . First thing is Sig is using a time tested mag type on this rifle, same type as on an AR, just converted for .22lr. I'm fairly certain that others went with a proprietary type of magazine, so you're gonna pay a lot for extra mags. Walmart is now selling this rifle for all you Walmart haters out there. There is a difference between the rifle I bought and the Walmart offering. Some states do not allow for flash suppressors on the barrel and since Walmart is in every state and is selling TONS of these rifles, they do not offer the gun with a flash suppressor and the barrel is not threaded for one, my state allows and mine has it. I bought a brick (1000) of Winchester M*22 ammo for this rifle, it is round nosed and supposedly burns cleaner and the tip is coated with a black substance. We shall see, $55 for the 1000. Also might try some of the Federal auto match grade ammo 325 rounds for $13.74 @ Walmart breaks out to $.04 per round vs. $05.5 for the M*22. Read a ton of great reviews on the Federal, if it works out I'm buying ALL of it. The Sig is supposed to eat ANY ammo w/o problem, I can live with $.04 a round.
My new Sig comes with a rail kit for the fore stock and iron sights. Early models did not have sights or the rail kit. Came with a hard case, now comes with a cardboard box, sights and the rail kit. I so far have ordered a 1.25in Blackhawk! tactical sling $9, and snap on swivel hooks $11, from Midway along with one of their padded tactical rifle bags @ $20!! and a Competition Range bag that is just blowing me away with it's quality and attention to detail. Also ordered a Bushnell Trophy 1x28 site with red/green dot and 4 different reticle choices either color, 11 levels of intensity. may order a bipod for bench shooting. The rifle should be here this week, it shipped today to my local FFL holder. I'm excited. 2 things sold me on the rifle, one was the nutnfancy review and the way it felt in my hands, a lot more metal over plastic parts, weighs 6 lb I think.

I JUST purchased a base model 15-22 a month ago. Already 1500 rounds through it, not a single problem. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one if somebody was looking for one. Breaks down like an AR, stupid easy to clean and re-assemble. Lots of "bolt ons" for 'em which makes it that much more fun for me.
So far the fewest ammo failures have been the Federal Bulk 550 copper plated. They're cheap and operate great, so I think I'll stick with those in this gun.

I bought a S&W MP15-22 a couple years ago... Before I got a real AR (figured I might as well learn on a weapon I could afford to shoot a LOT). The early models had some extraction/ejection issues, and mine certainly did. At first it was me every hundred rounds. Then it became one every 10 rounds after a while. I sent it back to Smith on their shipping dime. It came back about a week later in perfect working order. Now it might have an ejection issue once every 1000 rounds, which I consider normal for cheap bulk .22 ...
I would recommend one.

I probably would have went with a S&W M&P if it hadn't felt like a toy gun! It just doesn't replicate the "real AR" feel very well. I also have a Sig 556 so the 522 just made more sense as a compliment to it's bigger brother. I now have 3 different 10/22's and none of them offer the "fun factor" that this Sig offers. I have put over 3000 rounds downrange with it to date and never had a single bobble, perhaps even more reliable than the venerable 10/22? I have a Redfield 3x9 on it now and it prints 1/2" groups from 100 yards which is better than I envisioned for it before the scope. I love this little .22!
