Bargain Basement Fun!

When the .17HMR was introduced I was intrigued by the new rim-fire, but still unsure if I really needed one. It wasn't something I wanted to spend a bunch of money on for sure. Walking into my LGS one day there was an NEF Sportster on display with a ridiculously low price. I had a little cash in my pocket and the salesman was motivated to move something. The little Tasco 3-9x40mm in Weaver rings was $20 from the bargain box. A bipod, ammo, and an Otis pull-through kit had me out the door in the $250 range. The grins-per-dollar ratio this rifle provides is amazing. The thick tube drilled with the tiny .17cal bore is extremely stiff and accurate. Small pests are in grave danger anywhere in range of this little rig. Shooting those little 17gr V-Max screamers (almost 2600fps in my barrel) provides a real challenge in the wind!

good pickup and lots of fun as said shooting should be fun most of the time. Training is different but I shoot 550 rounds for fun to one of training.

Looks like a fun setup for taking time for each shot. Sounds like you got a nice deal as well!

It might not weight that much but, looks like it would be Tons of Fun to Shoot.
I've never shot the .17 , eradicating them there Pesky Varmints with it is the Fun Part.
Good Luck with it.
Want to know how the Pesky Varmints feel about that thing being around.
Have a Good New Year.

Nice rig. I always liked the NEF single shots.

The heavy barrel single-shot rifle is a unique beast. It is definitely a truck or bench gun, as I get tired carrying it into the house. It isn't the greatest target rifle because you really have to break position every shot loading and cocking the action. The heavy awkwardness disappears the second you get behind the rifle prone or at the bench though. My favorite targets are recycled 1/2pt water bottles with food coloring. The little (2.5"x4") bottles work great set out along the edge of my pines from 75 to 150yds.
