7.62 Carbine selectionThis is a discussion on 7.62 Carbine selection within the Rifles forums, part of the Rifle & Shotgun Forum category; The CZ would be an excellent choice in my opinion, as would the GSR, which I would favor. The GSR might be a bit expensive ... |

| they really are great guns arent they?
i love carbines, so i wanted one from the first time i saw one in a magazine when they first came out. when i finally had myself in a financial situation that buying one was a possibility,
(my 2 daughters braces were expensive LOL) it took me a couple months to save up for mine, and i wouldnt trade it for any rifle in the world. the day bought it, i was so proud to take it home....grinning ear to ear. pricey to feed, but absolutely the funnest rifle ive ever owned. i plan on being buried with mine

Depends on your preference, 308 or 7.62. the 308 will give longer legs, the 7.62 will be much cheaper to shoot. The price of the gun, the CZ would probably be a little cheaper. The better trigger goes to the CZ. If it were me, I think I'd go with the CZ.

I like the CZ 527M, but I would rather have a like new $300 SKS instead.

This gun would be a quick, special opportunities gun for coyotes, fox, bobcat, feral cats, wild dogs, and crows.
Any thoughts? | I wouldn't recommend using a rifle to shoot crows, with the possible exception of shooting them are already on the ground (some may consider this less than sporting. In that case, capture the crows alive and put in their yards). Otherwise, I'll defer to the other posters.

I found a new CZ 527 Carbine (7.62x39mm) still factory sealed at an auction last weekend and bought it for $375. I do note that the extra mags are pricey at @45-50 bucks and scope rings the same way. But the gun is beautiful. It feels like a 22 single-shot B A that I had as a kid. I will do a range report when I get to take it outside and shoot a bit. Photo coming when I get the scope mounted.
This gun was a great buy, and I think it will be a keeper for me. |

This gun was a great buy, and I think it will be a keeper for me. | The CZ 527 Carbine 7.62x39 quickley became my favorite rifle, and I have a lot of rifles. Really accurate even with cheap Russian Brown Bear 123 gr. HP. The mag prices are not that bad, you have to consider this is a hunting rifle, and how many mags do you need hunting. CZ make rings and so does Burris for the 527. I paid $39.95 for CZ Rings and then found Burris rings even cheaper.
When mounting a scope watch the size of it as this is a mini mauser action and it is tight for bolt clearance, I put a Bushnell 3-9x40 Legend HD scope on mine, fits fine....You got a absolute steal!
I like my CZ 527 carbine so well I am going to order a .223 version soon.

If you decide to go with a bolt action, the CZ527 would be a good choice. I have one and find it to very accurate and handy. I had a Mini-14 and 30 and enjoyed their handling and appearance, but I was never happy with their accuracy. With the 30 I was lucky to get 5" grouping at 100 yards. Don't know about the newer Mini's. A box of 7.62X39 ammo is available for $4.99 and up. Cheap enough to shoot.

I have shot a few and I am definitely impressed in no uncertian terms and will be getting one post haste myself. Considering I own some where in the neighborhood of 37 guns and need another one about as much as I need a bullet in the head, its really tough to justify yet one more gun to the collection. That right there ought to tell you a little something about the CZ-527!
If you prefer a bolt action, want it in 7.62x39, then the CZ-527 sounds like the hot ticket for you. The only reservation I think you might have is they are fairly nice finished guns and you might not want to have it get all beat up as a truck gun. They dont all fire 1/2 inch groups with the loose tolerances of "surplus" ammo, but with quality ammo using .311 bullets such as the Priv ammo, I think you might find yourself amazed with the accuracy these guns are capable of producing. Even the crappy TulAmmo will usually give up some nice 1 to 1 1/2 inch groups in the guns I have had the oppertunity of shooting. At 4.99 for a 20 round box, you just cant beat that!!! Hell, I cant even reload plinking ammo that cheap in this chambering.

Keep in mind that quality 7.62x39mm ammunition is expensive.
I doubt you will get 1/2" at 100 yards with Wolf ammunition. I hope you try, but my guess is you'll get two to four inch groups. Perhaps the 527 with a quality barrel and good optic will do better.

I picked up a used 527 last year and mounted a redfield 2-7x32 on it. Also thought it would make a great lightweight brush/truck gun. It proved to be as accurate as any other rifle in my safe. The set trigger is an awesome feature that I wish other manufacturers would adopt. If you get one I think you would be well pleased.

IMO, you can't go wrong if it has CZ on it. |

I don't have my optics yet, but here is a stock photo of my Model 527 as it will look shortly. It is a very 'pretty' rifle. |

My only carbine is a nearly 50 year old semi-automatic Remington 742 chambered in .308. It's accurate, but you're limited to a 4+1 capacity.
