.45 Colt *Ruger ONLY* Reload data for H110 & Lil'Gun

This is what I found on the Hogdon site for these two powders, I edited them into a single image so I could print it out and keep it near the loading bench.

These velocities were given for a 7 1/4" barrel. I wonder what they would realistically be out of a 4 5/8" barrel?

NOTE: These loads are NOT SAFE in a NEW VAQUERO. They are only intended for the original large frame Vaquero, Blackhawk, Super Blackhawk, etc.

I've notice that the Hodgson data has quite a differnt min/max for the Sierra 240gr and H110/296 than what Sierra list. Though it seems like Hodgson are always on the higher side than the bullet mfg listed data with H110/296 at least from what I've noticed with 45 colt and 357 mag.

I've loaded the Sierra 240 JHC for my 5.5 inch Blackhawk using H110 Starline cases and WLP with the data below and had very close velocities.

I only loaded up 3 rounds for each charge, so take from it what you will....

21.1 gr
1108 fps ave
50.87 ES
26.49 SD

23gr
1160 fps ave
9.0 ES
4.69 SD

24.5
error for all 3 shots....

I can give you one of my loads... 21.5 Lil Gun with a 345 gr. out of a 4.2" Redhawk gives me just shy of 1250. Hodgdon has 29k + as their max, although many reputable sources list 32k as max. I started low, ended up working to 23.0, but extraction started to get slightly sticky, and it was a bit much for the wrist... This was over 1300. I backed it down to a more reasonable 21.5 and I'm happy with it.

To caveat... Seating depth makes a big difference at this level. The difference between a stock cylinder and a reamed one dictated my seating depth, and powder levels and velocities differed.

While I'm not suggesting anyone do it, in my youth I stuffed .44/.45/.454 cases with W296/H110. I was accused of needing a cheater bar on my press when seating bullets.

I can tell you that you'll reach max velocity before you run out of room in the .45 Colt case. You can only burn so much slow powder in a revolver, the rest simply puts on a light show.

Pay heed to the "New Vaquero" warning. I put a few heavier loads through one I had and it was most unpleasant to shoot.

Heh I have some 340gr SSK linotype flat points over 22gr of 296 that are close to being a compressed load but extraction is still easy. I wouldn't want to go any higher than that.

Was doing some reloading with a friend this weekend. We were reloading some 45 Colt to be used in a Taurus 454. We had a disagreement about whether these loads could be used in the Taurus.

I am guessing that they would be OK but not sure.

What do you think

We would need more information besides the fact that the gun in question is a Taurus. That leaves a lot of room for speculation..

Which loads are you talking about? I wouldn't think shooting any of the loads I posted in the two charts would be an issue in that revolver if they are safe in a Ruger.

Beartooth casts a 325gr WFN DCG GC that is made with dual crimp grooves so that it can be set out farther for guns with a longer cylinder, leaving more room for powder to achieve higher velocities. I have always thought that using .45 Colt brass in a Casull was safe since the brass is not the weak part of the .45 Colt, it is the guns chambered for it. In years past, there were a few articles in the trade magazines where the writer did just that, loaded .454 loads in .45 Colt brass specifically to illustrate the point.
