| .357Mag help
I have been using my .357 for white tail for whats going to be my 3rd season this year. A friend of mine has always made up about 200 rounds of nearly max load 158 gr hornady xtps with HS6 powder. Now that i have begun reloading for myself i see there are powders that are capable of more speed at lower pressures, which to me translates into more energy, flatter trajectory, and less wear and tear on my gun. My lee load manual states that with H110 at 16.7 gr, i could push a hornady xtp 1591 fps, while i wouldnt go to max load, that figures up to roughly 890ft lbs at the muzzle. My question to you, are these velocities acheivable in a revolver with a 6 inch barrel or is this geard more towards the .357mag rifles? Your help is appreciated.

I suspect it is rifle data, but your manual should list the gun being used to achieve those figures.
My Hornady manual shows 15.5 grains of H110 as a max load with the 158 XTP in a 16" Rossi lever gun. In that gun and load, it produces 1650 fps. The same load in an 8" Colt Python shows 1250 fps. My old Sierra manual shows 1200fps for 16.3 grains of H110 out of a 6" Colt Python with a 158 grain hollow point.

Alliant powder is giving a load that reaches 1,686 out of a 10 in revolver, 158gr so you can probably get a good 1400-1500 out of a 6in but I cannot find the burn rate on this 300-mp. I think 1200-1300 is more reasonable, 158 is a heavy bullet.

My 7th edition of hornady reloading says that afor 158-160 gr HP-TXPs useing H 110 powder max load is 15.6 grs will give you 1250 fps for a 357 mag and 15.2 will give you 1200 fps hope this helps you out if you go to hornady's web sites you can get the min and max load data for all of there rounds

The 16.7 grs H110 load with 158 gr Hornady XTP at 1591 FPS was probably taken from the Hodgdon Loading manual. That is thier max load and that velocity was obtained with a 10 inch barrel. |

Confusion continues after SAAMI lowered 357 Mag max chamber pressure back in 1995. The older data is rated in CUP where the max chamber pressure was listed at 46,000 CUP. The new SAAMI standard is 35,000 psi. The max load of H-110 with a 158 gr bullet is now 15.5 gr. The old data can be as high as 17.8 gr of H-110. Your choice ... but in my opinion, the new pressure standard is plenty hot for a 357 Mag plus it extends the life of the gun by a huge amount.

Iowegan makes a very good point and I wouldn't shoot a great deal of full power loads. Up until recently Accurate Arms listed data for the .357 magnum that went up to about 43,000 CUP. When it comes to hunting with a .357 Magnum, I would want all of the energy and momentum I could safely use and wouldn't use a bullet lighter than 158 grs. There is still a source for the warmer loads that go up to over 40,000 CUP and that is the Lyman Pistol & Revolver III reloading manual. Keep in mind that you want to begin with the Start Charge and carefully load up to the Max Charge. Load 6-10 rounds at intervals of .2 grains until you find the best accuracy with enough velocity for hunting.
Keeping longevity of your revolver in mind, I would load just enough of the loads at near max, or the max load (if accurate) for your hunting needs and would not use them continually. |

And with the newer powders in my opinion if you need more power get a bigger gun.
I am real anxious to see how the MP300 runs in the rifle.

After this year i will probably be looking for a bigger gun, but in 2 seasons ive gotten 4 deer and have had to do very little tracking.

Plenty to take down a midwest whitetail. Some of the Buffalo Bore stuff is equalling .30-30 and plenty of vinison has been put on the table with those.

This spring i there will probably be a ruger 44 mag following me home.
