Hornady FTX in 38 special cases?

I have the 77/357 and do not want to trim down my 357 mag brass.

Was wondering who has tried out the Hornady FTX round in a 38 special case?

If you're shooting them in a Ruger revolver, measure the cylinder before you cut down the cases (or use .38 special cases). If you're using them in a rifle, make up a full-length dummy round (or two) to see if they'll cycle though the action.

When I was reloading .44 magnum with Hornady FTX bullets, I made a dummy round with a full-length case and it fit both my Redhawk and Blackhawk just fine. I eventually ended up trimming the .44 Magnum cases for the FTX bullet, but only because I wanted to use them in my Winchester 94, and it wouldn't function reliably with the full-length case.

Trim length of a .357 Mag case with the 140gr FTX is 1.240"...

That is almost .09 inch longer than a .38 Special at it's max length, and a full tenth inch longer than the .38 SPCL trim length...

The point is, you are changing the internal volume of that case by quite a bit...

If you insist on using the .38 SPCL case, then load accordingly lighter charges and work up carefully...

I use the 200 gr. FTX in the magnum case in my H&R Handi Rifle. I also use the 140 gr. FTX.

You will not have to trim your cases...most likely, if your magazine is long enough. Case trimming is necessary in some revolvers due to cylinder length. I can use full length cases with 140 gr. FTX in my SP101.

I know that you don't need to trim if using .357 cases and a GP100. They fit fine in mine.

If your 77/357 rifle has the standard SAAMI chamber, it likely has a long throat, so your cartridge OA length limiting factor is the magazine. In my single shot rifle, with the standard SAAMI chamber, I can load cartridges as long as 2.25"...depending on the bullet ogive.

On my website, I show some of the .357 loads I can use in my SS rifle.
