Is there a Primer Shortage?

I when to place an order with Powder Valley for some Primers and Powder and they were out of CCI small pistol and magnum small pistol primers. I called them and was told that they have been waiting for three weeks now to get orders that were placed over a month ago. Widners web site show they are out also. Where else is a good place to get CCI primers?

Max

Yep, my favorite suppliers have been out of small pistol for months, and not just CCI, all of them.

Lots of people stockpiling before the election.

I use only Winchester every one goes bang . so far .. I've been using Winchester primers since the late 70's. Just bought 3000 small and 2000 large pistol last week at my local pawn / gun shop. They had plenty on the shelf of all brands $30 per 1000 all brands except CCI there $35 ..

I got a email the other day from Reloading Supplies | Shooting | Reloading Tools | MidsouthShootersSupply.com . I didn't go into it but it was about a sale on primers and a reduced Haz Mat fee.

I was in two of the gun stores I frequent today and both had plenty of primers. One store had about 30 cases of Winchester large and small pistol primers. They were priced at $27.95 a thousand. I didn't need them and CCI is my number one choice but just couldn't pass up the price so 1000 came home with me.

I heard that a bunch of guys in Black Helicopters were buying them up.

Soon we will all be required to report to FEMA camps for internment.

My LGS has some but he charges $40.00 per 1000 so I don't buy from him. Most of the online sellers are out, or in very short supply.

I've experimented using small rifle magnum primers in some hot .357's and never had a mis-fire....even with light springs in my GP100
Small rifle are the same dimensions as small pistol

What does your pressure BBL give you for a reading? (It was rhetorical) Small rifle may be the same dimensions but they aren't the same pressure. They have to light off rifle powder so they have a bigger bang. Some handguns like the 454 casull call for them in reloading but with a 357 mag, particularily with full house load your pressure will spike.

But they are not the same intensity.

Try placing a variety of primers in an empty set of cases, then step outside at dark and touch them off. Rifle primers are designed to light up longer powder columns and powders that have different burn rates than pistol primers. They have noticeably more flash.

Be careful with that switch.

Supply has been pretty spotty here. My LGS had some yesterday, but mostly rifle. No small pistol to speak of. $32-$34.00/1000, which seems high, but by the time you pay for your bargain on the internet and pay shipping and hazmat, it comes out higher in the long run.

Looks to me that the shortage may be around for awhile.
