What make primer installer do you use ?

For the guys or girls who use a primer install tool what brand do you use or have used in the past.
I used a lee Auto Prime I bought back in the 70's or early 80's till last summer it broke and no part available to repair it I got the new improved auto prime XR. What a joke, it did work some but almost every other primer would flip over and if you didn't catch it you would install it upside down. I sent Lee a e-mail and they refunded my $$. They did have a new one coming out soon , the Ergo-prime, but I needed one now. Has anyone used one ? I got the RCBS Universal hand priming tool, it works good not as well as the old auto prime but well.
How about some other brands ?

I use the LEE Auto-Prime XR and I haven't had any issues at all with it. I'm new to reloading and I think it works great. Just followed directions, dumped in a box of primers, shook it back and forth a little and they all turned upright except 2. No complaints here.

Glad it works for you. I was having problems when the primer would lift onto the second level the primer would flip on the slide to the plunger. I cleaned and polished but would still flip...? I tried it on 2000 sm pistol and then tried 1000 large pistol it worked much better, but I load more small than large primers. It's gone now and I'm happy. Thanks for your reply..

Awards Showcase

I have the newer Lee Auto pirme XR. I had an issue with primers flipping when using Winchester small pistol primers. I contacted Lee about this and they sent me a replacement tray saying they had changed the specs. The new tray works mcuh better, but I still keep an eye on it. With CCI and Wolf primers I've had not problems. With Winchest large rifle primers which I've just begun to reload with, the problem seems a little more common.

I started with the RCBS Rockchucker on press, then went to the RCBS hand unit, it wouldn't work well until I installed longer rods to get the primers to bottom out.

Tried the Lee hand primer, the round tray, and liked it , to me it was easier to "feel" the primer seating with the thumb, so when the newer XR showed I bought one and have had no problem with mine.

Guess I'll try the Lee Ergo when I get a few $$.

I wore out my first Lee (round tray) and bought a new 'square' tray. Any jump in the tray would let loose a few primers onto the floor and I was getting a few upside down too.

Got a new one with the cage upgrade to the clear plastic lids and also paid more attention to primer pocket prep. Works pretty good now but not yet 100%.

Lee Safety Prime 95% of the time, Lee Auto Prime the other 5%. Both work perfectly for me and I load exclusively with soft federal primers, usually with range brass. Other than my rifle cases I never clean a primer pocket.

terry_p will become famous soon enough
RCBS Bench Mounted Priming Tool. I'm 65 this year and have some arthritis in my hands and this just makes the priming easy and consistent. I bought it used on flea-bay for about 1/5 of the price of a new one right now.
