I tried the RCBS universal primer tool, but switched to the RCBS hand priming tool. The reason was that the universal would not do two cartridges I reload, (5.7x28 and 45/70) - the smallest and the biggest I use. The regular hand loader uses the shell holders that are used in the press and changing them is really no big deal.
I also have the Lee Auto Prime XR (a recent "upgrade") and find it to not be the tool I'd used for 30 years. THIS was a sad discovery that prompted my trying the RCBS priming tools. Unfortunately, I had dropped the 30 year old Lee Auto Primer and terminally broke it.
As always, YMMV |

I use the Lee Ram Prime...Like me it's slow and easy...simple...cheap. I'm older and a limited quantity reloader...never in a hurry and I just like the simplicity of the Ram Prime. I've never gotten a primer upside down or had any issues with it in lots of loading. I'm uncomfortable with priming tools that have stacks of primers...I don't know if they can detonate but if I have one go off...it's just the one I'm dealing with at the time.

My ancient LEE round-tray version has finally worn enough to occasionally screw up. Used it for many years with complete satisfaction, but it's time to "move along". LEE will replace it with a square-tray version for half-price if you send in your old one, but by the time you pay to ship it to them you might just as well simply order the replacement without messing with the trade-in. I think that's what I'm gonna do.

JMHO | Yes same here I loved the round Lee , But they do not make it anymore maybe could find one on e-bay. The square tray did not work for me , I see it did for a few but it was really bad about flipping the small primer over on the ramp to the press. Did work better with large primers. I like the RCBS universal for small primers you just have to be quick snapping the cover on with a full load of primers in the tray.
Good luck.

RCBS hand primer. Fits in my load box, works fine, lasts a long time.

I use the Lee safety prime system mounted on my LCT press. It works just fine, and facilitates the constant flow of just adding components, and four pulls later you have a finished round.

I use the Lee hand primer. I have the auto one, but I like taking my time and making things the best that I can.
Also, did Lee put a warning on your auto primer that you should only use Winchester or CCI primers?

I do not remember where I was told that, but yes it has been stated that Federal primers are to "soft" for it.
That does not bother me in the least, as I prefer, and load only CCI primers.

Depends on which version you have.
I believe they have removed the restriction on the most recent design, but I'm not sure which one that is.
Exercise due diligence. |
